Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a critical systemic complication caused by Bothrops envenoming, a neglected health problem in the Brazilian Amazon. Understanding the underlying mechanisms leading to AKI is crucial for effectively mitigating the burden of this complication. This study aimed to characterize the urinary protein profile of Bothrops atrox snakebite victims who developed AKI.

Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted in a maternity unit among Brazilian women aged 14 years or older during the first 72 h postpartum, who desired and had vaginal birth. Sociodemographic, clinical, and obstetric data were collected using a standardized form from medical charts.
Shotgun proteomics aims to identify and quantify the thousands of proteins in complex mixtures such as cell and tissue lysates and biological fluids. This approach uses liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry and typically generates hundreds of thousands of mass spectra that require specialized computational environments for data analysis. PatternLab for proteomics is a unified computational environment for analyzing shotgun proteomic data.

Tumor surgery implies the removal of an apparently non-tumorous tissue around the tumor in an attempt to reduce recurrence chances; this tissue is referred to as the resection margin. Our analysis employed an 8-plex iTRAQ to label four adenocarcinoma biopsies and their corresponding resection margins at 5cm; our results disclose fifty-six proteins as being differentially abundant.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTumors consist of cells in different stages of transformation with molecular and cellular heterogeneity. By far, heterogeneity is the hallmark of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most malignant and aggressive type of glioma. Most proteomic studies aim in comparing tumors from different patients, but here we dive into exploring the intratumoral proteome diversity of a single GBM.

As such, determining DNA methylation patterns should aid, in times to come, in the diagnosis and personal treatment for various types of cancers. Here, we analyzed the methylation pattern from five colorectal cancer patients from the Amazon state in Brazil for four tumor suppressor genes, viz.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAssociated production of the Higgs boson with a top-antitop pair is a key channel to gather further information on the nature of the newly discovered boson at the LHC. Experimentally, however, its observation is very challenging due to the combination of small rates, difficult multijet final states, and overwhelming backgrounds. In the standard model, the largest number of events is expected when h→bb, giving rise to a W+ W- bbbb signature, deluged in tt + jets.
