Forty three patients with chronic alcoholism of stage II with secondary affective disorders (anxiety, subdepression) and actualization of pathological drive for alcohol in remission period were divided into 3 groups: patients were treated with nimodipine (90 mg/day during 10 days), patients were treated with nifedipine (45 mg/day during 10 days) and patients of control group (they received a placebo for 10 days). The study was double blind. The results revealed that both calcium channels antagonists reduced a level of depression measured with the Hamilton scale and Zung test.

Nitrofurylacrylic acid sodium salt is a substance of moderate toxicity. Its LD50 for male rats after oral administration comprises 1220 mg/kg, for female rats--1400 mg/kg. The minimal toxic dose, in case of long-term administration comprises 14 mg/kg.

The study of cerebral blood flow was performed with the aid of hydrogen clearance technique and the cinema-television method in alteration of cholinergic transmission by means of phosphorus-organic inhibitors of cholinesterase and a cholinolytic agent in unanesthetized rats. The enzyme inhibition by 60-70% sharply increased the velocity of blood flow in the microvessels of cerebral cortex and in the sagittal sinus. A considerable vasodilation of pial vessels occurred.

Hygienic regulation of the use of the agents studied in animal experiments as food additives has been validated with respect to the dose level, regimen of addition and the period of waiting for slaughter. It is recommended that tylosin-phosphate should be included into the animals' ration as a food additive in a dose of 60 mg/kg for a short time (2-3 days), the period of waiting for slaughter being not less than 6-7 days. Addition of vitagrin has been recommended for young growing animals in a dose of 400-500 g/ton of feed.

The results are presented of toxico-hygienic investigations of dehydroacetic acid sodium salt (DHASS) proposed as a food additive. The compound toxicity values have been assessed, and late results of the preservative influence on the body of experimental animals after its oral intake have been studied. An approximate value of daily intake (AVDI) of the compound has been calculated.

Experiments on white male Wistar rats with the use of the cinetelevision technique have shown that armine in a single LD50 provokes a 85-100% increase in the blood flow rate in the microvessels and a 45-50% elevation of the diameter of the pial arterioles. Administration of the drug in a dose of 1/2 of the LD50 brings about a 90% increase in the blood flow rate, whereas the diameter of the arterioles declines by 25%. The LD50 of armine lowers the cholinesterase activity in the brain and blood by 50-60%, while 1/2 of the drug LD50 by 20-30%.

Introduction of kormogrisein-10 and fradizin-10 into feeds of farm animals did not lead to accumulation in the animals' meat of grisin and tilozin residues or to an adverse effect of such meat on the body of experimental rats. In the course of oral administration of the preparations to the animals the authors determined the period of detectability of antibiotic residues in muscles and organs and the minimal toxic doses of the preparations.

Investigations made it possible to establish that in the period from 1925-28 to 1970-71 there took place in the Ukraine an increase in the consumption of animal products (milk, meat, fish, eggs), of sugar, vegetables, fruits and a fall in the consumption of cereals (bakery products, grits, macaroni, beans) and potato. Because of these dietary changes in the nutritional pattern of the population there were noted an elevated proportional share of proteins and fats, basically of animal origin, and a decrease in that of complex carbohydrates. A direct relation between the health status of the population and its alimentation has been ascertained; first--between the calorific value of the food products sets and their fat and carbohydrates content, on the one hand, and the body weight of the examined, on the other; and secondly--between the fluorine level in the food and the prevalence of fluorosis, caries, exostosis, aggravated by an imbalance of a number of nutritional components, on the other.

The prevalence of adiposity and nutritional status among the working population of seven regions in the Ukrainian SSR (teachers, workers engaged in the chemical, metallurgical, textile, wood-working industries and in agriculture) were studied. Only 44 per cent of males and 25 per cent of females were found to be of normal weight. Some surplus weight had 21 per cent of men and 26 per cent of women, 9 per cent of men and 21 per cent of women suffered from adiposity of the 1st degree and 2 per cent of males and 15 per cent of females had adiposity of the II degree.
