Background/objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic created many challenges for health services, particularly during lockdown periods. Asthma is one of the most common childhood conditions, and children with asthma are generally cared for in an outpatient setting. In regional Northwest Tasmania, during the COVID-19 lockdowns, asthma and allergy outpatient clinic services were transferred to a virtual platform in the form of telehealth appointments for routine consultations.

Detection of Mismatch Repair Deficiency in Endometrial Cancer: Assessment of IHC, Fragment Length Analysis, and Amplicon Sequencing Based MSI Testing.

Mismatch repair (MMR) deficiency can be indicative of Lynch syndrome (LS) and guide treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Colorectal cancers (CRCs) and endometrial cancers (ECs) are routinely screened to identify LS, primarily using immunohistochemistry (IHC) or microsatellite instability (MSI) testing, but concordance between these methods is variable in ECs. Here, we investigate this variability in 361 ECs from the Ohio OCCPI/OPTEC ( = 196) and Manchester PETALS ( = 165) trials, where concordance between assays differed significantly.

Technology has the potential to address the unique needs of young stroke survivors. Despite this, little is known about the technological resources available to support young adults with stroke. This study aimed to identify and compile available technological resources that cater to the specific needs of young adults (18-30 years) with stroke in Australia.

An integrated approach to neuroscience care: An innovative model to support the new integrated care system.

Integrated care systems join up health and care services, so that people have the support they need, in the right place, at the right time. The aims include improving outcomes in healthcare, tackling inequalities in access and enhancing productivity and value for money. This is needed for neuroscience care as the traditional delivery of neuroscience care is inefficient, outdated and expensive, and can involve complex referral pathways and long waiting times.

An international perspective on young stroke incidence and risk factors: a scoping review.

Background: Stroke among younger age groups is increasing globally. While there is a focus on research conducted on people under 65 years who have had a stroke, there is a paucity of data on the incidence and risk factors of stroke among younger people (≤ 30 years). This scoping review examines evidence on incidence and risk factors for perinatal, paediatric and young adult stroke globally.

Unilateral hindlimb ischaemia-induced systemic inflammation is associated with non-ischaemic skeletal muscle inflammation.

Skeletal muscle atrophy and dysfunction commonly accompany cardiovascular diseases such as peripheral arterial disease and may be partially attributable to systemic inflammation. We sought to determine whether acute systemic inflammation in a model of hindlimb ischaemia (HLI) could affect skeletal muscle macrophage infiltration, fibre size, or capillarization, independent of the ischaemia. Eight-week-old C57BL/6 male mice underwent either Sham or HLI surgery, and were killed 1, 3, or 7 days post-surgery.

Arterial function in response to a 50 km ultramarathon in recreational athletes.

This study was performed to determine whether prolonged endurance running results in acute endothelial dysfunction and wave-reflection, as endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness are cardiovascular risk factors. Vascular function (conduit artery/macrovascular and resistance artery/microvascular) was assessed in 11 experienced runners (8 males, 3 females) before, during and after a 50 km ultramarathon. Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), wave reflection, augmentation index (AIx) and AIx corrected for HR (AIx75) were taken at all time points-Baseline (BL), following 10, 20, 30 and 40 km, 1 h post-completion (1HP) and 24 h post-completion (24HP).

Traditional Plant-Derived Compounds Inhibit Cell Migration and Induce Novel Cytoskeletal Effects in Glioblastoma Cells.

Glioblastomas (GBMs) are aggressive and invasive cancers of the brain, associated with high rates of tumour recurrence and poor patient outcomes despite initial treatment. Targeting cell migration is therefore of interest in highly invasive cancers such as GBMs, to prevent tumour dissemination and regrowth. One current aim of GBM research focuses on assessing the anti-migratory properties of novel or repurposed inhibitors, including plant-based drugs which display anti-cancer properties.

Carbon analysis of large soil samples using the tagged neutron method: Accounting for radiation attenuation.

Non-destructive methodology for determining carbon content in large or semi-infinite (soil) samples is discussed. This methodology is based on deconvoluting the sample's gamma spectra (received by tagged neutron method) on the sample component's spectra by accounting for neutron and gamma radiation attenuations. This algorithm was tested with both Monte-Carlo simulations and experimental gamma spectra.

Environmental Risk Assessment in Community Care: A Scoping Review.

Community care encompasses inherent risks for both clients and healthcare providers. Maintaining a safe environment for the delivery of care services ensures that any risk of unintentional or intentional personal harm is minimised. The aim of this scoping review is to (a) provide an overview of existing knowledge by summarising the current literature and (b) identify gaps pertaining to understanding and managing environmental risk in community care settings.

Perspectives of practicing school psychologists during COVID-19: A multi-country, mixed methods investigation.

COVID-19 presented a range of challenges to the delivery of school psychology services in countries around the world. The current study aimed to investigate the practices of school psychologists from the United States of America, Australia, Germany, Canada, and the United Kingdom, including changes to practice and exploration of the factors that supported the delivery of school psychology services during the pandemic. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 1,030 school psychologists and analyzed using a mixed methods, multiple case study design.

Rational design of a cyclohexanone dehydrogenase for enhanced α,β-desaturation and substrate specificity.

The selective α,β-desaturation of cyclic carbonyl compounds, which are found in the core of many steroid and bioactive molecules, using green chemistry is highly desirable. To achieve this task, we have for the first time described and solved the structure of a member of the cyclohexanone dehydrogenase class of enzymes. The breadth of substrate specificity was investigated by assaying the cyclohexanone dehydrogenase, from , against several cyclic ketones, lactones and lactams.

Belowground Response of a Bahiagrass Pasture to Long-Term Elevated [CO] and Soil Fertility Management.

Effects of rising atmospheric CO concentration [CO] on pastures and grazing lands are beginning to be researched, but these important systems remain understudied compared to other agronomic and forest ecosystems. Therefore, we conducted a long-term (2005-2015) study of bahiagrass ( Flüggé) response to elevated [CO] and fertility management. The study was conducted at the USDA-ARS, National Soil Dynamics Laboratory open-top field chamber facility, Auburn, AL.

Maintaining the quality of vaccines through the use of standards: Current challenges and future opportunities.

An international hybrid meeting held 21-22 June 2023 in Ottawa, Canada brought together regulators, scientists, and industry experts to discuss a set of principles and best practices in the development and implementation of standards. Although the use of international standards (ISs) and international units (IUs) has been an essential part of ensuring human and animal vaccine quality in the past decades, the types and uses of standards have expanded with technological advances in manufacture and testing of vaccines. The needs of stakeholders are evolving in response to the ever-increasing complexity, diversity, and number of vaccine products as well as increasing efforts to replace animal-based potency tests with in vitro assays that measure relevant quality attributes.

Standardised quantitative assays for anti-SARS-CoV-2 immune response used in vaccine clinical trials by the CEPI Centralized Laboratory Network: a qualification analysis.

Background: Accurate quantitation of immune markers is crucial for ensuring reliable assessment of vaccine efficacy against infectious diseases. This study was designed to confirm standardised performance of SARS-CoV-2 assays used to evaluate COVID-19 vaccine candidates at the initial seven laboratories (in North America, Europe, and Asia) of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) Centralized Laboratory Network (CLN).

Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA)-mediated control of gene expression contributes to regulation of biological processes that include proliferation and phenotype, as well as compromised expression of genes that are functionally linked to cancer initiation and tumor progression. lncRNAs have emerged as novel targets and biomarkers in breast cancer. We have shown that mitotically associated lncRNA MANCR is expressed in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells and that it serves a critical role in promoting genome stability and survival in aggressive breast cancer cells.

Randomised Control Trial Investigating the Efficacy of Meloxicam and Sodium Salicylate Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs for Calf Cautery Disbudding.

Disbudding calves using hot iron cautery is a routine management procedure to destroy the germinal cells around the horn bud in calves. It is recommended that NSAIDs are used in conjunction with local anaesthesia to reduce pain in calves during and after the procedure. In this study, two treatment groups were examined; calves in the positive control MEL group received subcutaneous meloxicam, and SAL calves received sodium salicylate orally for three days, both in addition to a local anaesthesia.

Background: Socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with stroke occurrence and survival following stroke but its association with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) following stroke remains uncertain. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the association between SES and HRQoL after stroke.

Methods: PubMed, SCOPUS, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched to identify relevant cohort and case-control studies between January 2000 and May 2022.

Teixobactin is a cyclic undecadepsipeptide that has shown excellent potency against multidrug-resistant pathogens, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE). In this article, we present the design, synthesis, and antibacterial evaluations of 16 different teixobactin analogues. These simplified analogues contain commercially available hydrophobic, non-proteogenic amino acid residues instead of synthetically challenging expensive L-allo-enduracididine amino acid residue at position 10 together with different combinations of arginines at positions 3, 4 and 9.

Black individuals and men are predisposed to an earlier onset and higher prevalence of hypertension, compared with White individuals and women, respectively. Therefore, the influence of race and sex on reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity following induced inflammation was evaluated in female and male human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) from Black and White individuals. It was hypothesized that HUVECs from Black individuals and male HUVECs would exhibit greater ROS production and impaired SOD activity.

Mental health in autistic adults: A rapid review of prevalence of psychiatric disorders and umbrella review of the effectiveness of interventions within a neurodiversity informed perspective.

Background: Autistic adults have high risk of mental ill-health and some available interventions have been associated with increased psychiatric diagnoses. Understanding prevalence of psychiatric diagnoses is important to inform the development of individualised treatment and support for autistic adults which have been identified as a research priority by the autistic community. Interventions require to be evaluated both in terms of effectiveness and regarding their acceptability to the autistic community.
