Epoxyjanthitrems I-IV (-) and epoxyjanthitriol () were isolated from seed of perennial ryegrass () infected with the endophytic fungus var. Although structures for epoxyjanthitrems I-IV have previously been proposed in the literature, this is the first report of a full structural elucidation yielding NMR (Nuclear magnetic resonance) assignments for all five epoxyjanthitrem compounds, and additionally, it is the first isolation of epoxyjanthitriol (). Epoxyjanthitrem I induced tremors in mice and gave a dose dependent reduction in weight gain and feeding for porina (), a common pasture pest in New Zealand.

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is prevalent around the tropical and sub-tropical latitudes of the world and impacts many Pacific island communities intrinsically linked to the reef system for sustenance and trade. While the genus Gambierdiscus has been linked with CFP, it is commonly found on tropical reef systems in microalgal assemblages with other genera of toxin-producing, epiphytic and/or benthic dinoflagellates - Amphidinium, Coolia, Fukuyoa, Ostreopsis and Prorocentrum. Identifying a biomarker compound that can be used for the early detection of Gambierdiscus blooms, specifically in a mixed microalgal community, is paramount in enabling the development of management and mitigation strategies.

Tolyporphins are glycosylated macrocycles isolated from lipophilic soil extracts of the cyanobacterium, Tolypothrix nodosa, and found to potentiate the cytotoxicity of antitumor drugs like vinblastine and adriamycin. Here we find that, unlike porphyrins, tolyporphins are not able to form complexes with most metal ions. However, they do react strongly with copper(II) and silver(II), forming square-planar metal complexes with an unpaired electron in a d orbital of the metal delocalized onto the ligating tolyporphin nitrogen atoms.

Pterocellin A is a novel bioactive alkaloid isolated from the New Zealand marine bryozoan Pterocella vesiculosa. It exhibits potent antitumour activity towards the P388 (murine leukaemia) cell line in vitro and is selectively sensitive towards certain non-small cell lung, melanoma, and breast cancer cell lines, however, the biological mode of action of pterocellin A is unknown. Using the human cervical cancer cell line HeLa, we show that pterocellin A exhibited cytotoxicity against HeLa cells with an IC50 of 886 ng/mL.

Thiol derivatization of microcystins is an emerging technique for simplifying mass spectrometric analysis of microcystins in complex matrices and for distinguishing between Mdha-/Dhb-containing microcystins. The present protocol is not compatible with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, but use of sodium carbonate buffer and desalting with ZipTips yielded no loss in sensitivity. Use of ammonium carbonate buffer followed by dilution in MALDI matrix resulted in a small loss of sensitivity but allowed accurate determination of reaction rates.

NMR-directed screening of New Zealand marine organisms has led to the isolation of the modified tripeptide janolusimide B from the common invasive bryozoan Bugula flabellata. The structure was established by NMR and MS analysis, degradative hydrolysis and derivatization, and stereoselective fragment synthesis. The bryozoan natural product is an N-methyl analogue of janolusimide, previously reported from the Mediterranean nudibranch Janolus cristatus, a species known to prey upon bryozoa.
