Article Synopsis
  • The minimally invasive total laryngectomy (TL) approach aims to reduce recovery complications, especially in patients with prior radiation treatment, and has been demonstrated using the transoral ultrasonic surgery technique (TOUSS).
  • Two patients undergoing TL for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma experienced successful tumor removal with satisfactory functional recovery in swallowing and speech, with no intraoperative complications recorded.
  • The research suggests that TOUSS-TL is a feasible, non-robotic alternative to robotic methods, potentially enhancing the adoption of minimally invasive techniques in laryngeal surgeries, with further studies needed to assess long-term outcomes and benefits.

The objective of this study is to describe and evaluate the feasibility of TransOral UltraSonic Surgery (TOUSS), a new endoscopic alternative to transoral robotic surgery for approaching pharyngeal and laryngeal tumours based on ultrasonic scalpel as a resection tool. This is a prospective study on 11 consecutive patients with pharyngeal and supraglottic carcinomas between December 2013 and August 2014. All tumours were resected transorally with 35 cm ThunderbeatTM.
