Stem cells of the mouse testicular teratocarcinoma are capable of giving rise in vivo and in vitro to a wide variety of cell and tissue types representative of each embryonic germ layer. Multiangle light-scattering measurements in a flow system have been made on these stem cells and on a variety of their differentiated derivatives. This technique is capable of distinguishing the stem cells from parietal yolk sac cells, visceral yolk sac cells, neuronal cells and squamous cells.

Multi-angle light scattering flow photometry was used to study the light scattering properties of normal cultured fibroblasts and a mutant fibroblast line containing cytoplasmic lysosomal inclusions. The effect of glutaraldehyde fixation on the light scattering properties of the cells was also examined and correlated with their ultrastructure. Normal fibroblasts showed uniform organelle distribution with few vacuoles or dense bodies in the cytoplasm while the mutant line showed abnormal cytoplasmic inclusions of varying morphology, density and lucency.

A series of N-aryl-N'-(1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinylidene)ureas was prepared and screened for pharmacological activity. Congeners possessing either phenyl or phenyl substituted with 4-nitro, 3-bromo, 3-chloro, 3-fluoro, and 3-methyl groups were found to demonstrate anxiolytic activity. 2,6-Disubstitution of the phenyl ring with methyl, chloro, and bromo imparted potent muscle-relaxant properties which appear to be centrally mediated.

A method is described for the first time for rapid and accurate discrimination among several algal types by their light-scattering properties alone. Using a multiangle light-scattering flow system, we obtained light-scatter patterns for individual cells in asynchronous cultures of Chlorella, Chlamydomonas, and Anacystis. The patterns are consistent and distinct for each species.

This study of patients in the outpatient department at an urban hospital revealed that almost all could have reached a neighborhood center in less time and only a small number came to the hospital rather than a neighborhood center out of medical necessity. When the patients were asked about their willingness to obtain treatment at a neighborhood center, 48 per cent were willing, 52 per cent were not. These responses did not vary by demographic or medical characteristics but rather by the patients' stated priorities regarding medical care.

Treatment effectiveness for drug dependance is evaluated and compared with success rates reported in the literature. Program differences and varying follow-up procedures make assessment difficult. Identical pre- and posttreatment quantitative adjustment indices are recommended in order to improve the measurement of improvement.

Topical application of retinoic acid on guinea-pig skin resulted within 70 hours in erythema with a concomitant elevation of endogenous prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in the treated areas of the skin. Prolonged daily treatment resulted in the development of severe scaly dermatoses and a corresponding decrease in the level of PGE2 in the skin. Examination of retinoic acid effects on the in vitro biosynthesis of PGE2 from arachidonic acid by extracts from guinea-pig skin and sheep vesicular gland demonstrated that retinoic acid inhibits prostaglandin synthesis in a concentration and time-dependent manner.

This study was designed to: describe the internal state of addicts undergoing primary withdrawal, determine how the internal state is altered by the alleviation of withdrawal stress through an acute dose of methadone, and to determine a predictor of the probability of a patient completing detoxification. Sixty-seven male and female heroin addicts accepted for methadone detoxification were administered a 65-item Profile of Mood States (POMS). Forty-nine of the Ss were tested immediately prior to receiving their initial dose of methadone and again 45 minutes later, while the remaining 18 Ss were only tested 45 minutes after receiving their methadone in order to control for the effects of repeated testing.
