Diuretic hormones (DHs) activate corresponding G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), mediating the water and ion homeostasis in arthropods. There are two different DHs known to be expressed in insects, calcitonin (CT)-like DH31 and corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)-like DH44. In this study, we identified and characterized a DH44 and five GPCR variants, DH44-R1 and DH44-R2a/b/c/d, in Drosophila suzukii (spotted-wing drosophila), causing detrimental damage to fresh and soft-skinned fruits.

Low coverage 'genome-skims' are often used to assemble organelle genomes and ribosomal gene sequences for cost-effective phylogenetic and barcoding studies. Natural history collections hold invaluable biological information, yet poor preservation resulting in degraded DNA often hinders polymerase chain reaction-based analyses. However, it is possible to generate libraries and sequence the short fragments typical of degraded DNA to generate genome-skims from museum collections.

Purpose: Dumping syndrome (DS) is a common complication of metabolic surgery, occurring in as many as 40% of bariatric patients. The reference diagnostic test is oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT) which is often poorly tolerated and may induce false positive results. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is better tolerated and can monitor patients for about 2 weeks in everyday life.

We present field-domain rapid-scan (RS) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) at 8.6T and 240GHz. To enable this technique, we upgraded a home-built EPR spectrometer with an FPGA-enabled digitizer and real-time processing software.

Characterization of the proteins encoded by a recently emerged cotton-infecting Polerovirus.

The cotton leafroll dwarf virus (CLDV), an important viral pathogen responsible for substantial losses in cotton crops, has recently emerged in the United States (US). Although CLDV shares similarities with other members of the genus Polerovirus in terms of encoded proteins, their functional characteristics remain largely unexplored. In this study, we expressed and analyzed each protein encoded by CLDV to determine its intracellular localization using fluorescence protein fusion.

Unravelling the impact of soil data quality on species distribution models of temperate forest woody plants.

Soil properties influence plant physiology and growth, playing a fundamental role in shaping species niches in temperate forest ecosystems. Here, we investigated the impact of soil data quality on the performance of species distribution models (SDMs) of 41 woody plant species in Swiss forests. We compared models based on measured soil properties with those based on digitally mapped soil properties on regional (Swiss Forest Soil Maps) and global scales (SoilGrids).
