Medical isotope production of C is commonly performed in gaseous targets. The power deposition of the proton beam during the irradiation decreases the target density due to thermodynamic mixing and can cause an increase of penetration depth and divergence of the proton beam. We developed a paper coating for the potential application in food packaging based on polylactide and montmorillonite. It is applied to the paper in the form of a stable, water-based latex with a solid content of 25⁻28 wt %. Sixty-one rhizobial strains from Lathyrus japonicus nodules growing on the seashore in Japan were characterized and compared to two strains from Canada. The PCR-based method was used to identify test strains with novel taxonomic markers that were designed to discriminate between all known Lathyrus rhizobia. Phage-resistant and -susceptible bacteria from nodules of alfalfa and sweet clover, grown at a site without a known history of cultivation, were identified as diverse genotypes of Ensifer, Rhizobium and Phyllobacterium species based on sequence analysis of ribosomal (16S and 23S rRNA) and protein-encoding (atpD and recA) genes, Southern hybridization/RFLP and a range of phenotypic characteristics. Among phage-resistant bacteria, one genotype of Rhizobium sp. predominated on alfalfa (frequency approximately 68 %) but was recovered infrequently ( approximately 1 %) from sweet clover.

Raman spectroscopy (in the low-frequency range and the amide I band region) and modulated differential scanning calorimetry investigations have been used to analyze temperature-induced structural changes in lysozyme dissolved in 1H2O and 2H2O in the thermal denaturation process. Low-frequency Raman data reveal a change in tertiary structure without concomitant unfolding of the secondary structure. Calorimetric data show that this structural change is responsible for the configurational entropy change associated with the strong-to-fragile liquid transition and correspond to about 1/3 of the native-denaturated transition enthalpy.

A comparative investigation of trehalose, sucrose, and maltose in water solution has been performed using Raman scattering experiments and Molecular Dynamics simulations. From the analysis of the O-H stretching region in the [2500,4000] cm(-1) Raman spectral range, which includes for the first time the contribution of 'free' water, and the statistical distribution of water HB probabilities from MD simulations, this study confirms the privileged interaction of trehalose with water above a peculiar threshold weight concentration of about 30%. The role of the hydration number of sugars--found higher for trehalose--on the destructuring effect of the water hydrogen bond network is also addressed.
