Diversity of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria isolated from Australian chicken and pork meat.

Antimicrobial-resistant bacteria are frequently isolated from retail meat and may infect humans. To determine the diversity of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in Australian retail meat, bacteria were cultured on selective media from raw chicken ( = 244) and pork ( = 160) meat samples obtained from all four major supermarket chains in the ACT/NSW, Australia, between March and June 2021. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) was performed for 13 critically and 4 highly important antibiotics as categorised by the World Health Organization (WHO) for a wide range of species detected in the meat samples.

Heartworm and seal louse: Trends in prevalence, characterisation of impact and transmission pathways in a unique parasite assembly on seals in the North and Baltic Sea.

The ectoparasitic seal louse, infects harbour () and grey seals () in the North and Baltic Sea. The endoparasitic heartworm parasitizes the right heart and blood vessels of harbour seals. The complete lifecycle of the heartworm is not entirely understood although the seal louse is assumed to serve as vector for its transmission.

Marine mammals host a great variety of parasites, which usually co-evolved in evolutionary arms races. However, little is known about the biology of marine mammal insect parasites, and even less about physical aspects of their life in such a challenging environment. One of 13 insect species that manage to endure long diving periods in the open sea is the seal louse, Echinophthirius horridus, parasitising true seals.

Introduction: The Oswestry Spinal Risk Index (OSRI) was designed to predict life expectancy of patients presenting with spinal metastases. It integrates the most predictive items of existing scores and is calculated using not more than two items: General condition and primary tumor.

Research Question: The purpose of this study was to externally validate the OSRI in a large cohort and to compare it with the established scores.

A multifractal analysis was conducted to provide quantitative measures of density, dispersion, and clustering of spores on the surfaces.

Use of spherical particles to understand conidial attachment to surfaces using atomic force microscopy.

Binding of particles and spores to surfaces is a natural phenomenon which is a prerequisite for biofilm formation. Perpendicular force measurements were carried out using atomic force microscopy cantilevers modified with a polystyrene or glass sphere. The attachment of the spheres was tested against glass, PVAc, p(γ-MPSco-MMA), p(γ-MPS-co-LMA), PMMAsc, and silicon surfaces.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of emotion processing in major depressive disorder (MDD) may reveal regional brain function serving as predictors of response to treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). We examined the association between pre-treatment neural activity by means of fMRI during the perception of emotional stimuli in 22 patients with MDD and the treatment outcome after 6 weeks' medication with an SSRI.

Over the years, the performance of the liposomal formulations of temoporfin, Foslip® and Fospeg®, was investigated in a broad array of cell-based assays and preclinical animal models. So far, little attention has been paid to the influence of drug release and liposomal stability on the plasma concentration-time profile. The drug release is a key attribute which impacts product quality and the in vivo efficacy of nanocarrier formulations.

PPARγ is a pharmacological target in inflammatory and metabolic diseases. Upon agonistic treatment or following antagonism, binding of co-factors is altered, which consequently affects PPARγ-dependent transactivation as well as its DNA-independent properties. Therefore, establishing techniques to characterize these interactions is an important issue in living cells.

They are accessible either by the Suzuki-Miyaura or Negishi C,C cross-coupling reaction of FcB(OH) (1a) or FcZnCl (1b) with the appropriate bromo-naphthalenes 2a-e and 5a-d, respectively. The molecular structures of 3a-c, 3e, 4, 6b-d and 7a-d in the solid state were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of photodynamic agents to combat mosquito larvae.

Foscan®, a formulation comprising temoporfin dissolved in a mixture of ethanol and propylene glycol, has been approved in Europe for palliative photodynamic therapy of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. During clinical and preclinical studies it was observed that considering the administration route, the drug presents a rather atypical plasma profile as plasma concentration peaks delayed. Possible explanations, as for example the formation of a drug depot or aggregation after intravenous administration, are discussed in current literature.

Many bacteria can switch from oxygen to nitrogen oxides, such as nitrate or nitrite, as terminal electron acceptors in their respiratory chain. The synthesis of complexes [M(OCHMeCHNMeCH)] (5, M = Mg; 7, M = Zn) is described. Treatment of MeHNCHCHNMeH (1) with 2-methyloxirane (2) gave diol (HOCHMeCHNMeCH) (3), which upon reaction with equimolar amounts of MR (4, M = Mg, R = Bu; 6, M = Zn, R = Et) gave 5 and 7. The thermal behavior and vapor pressure of 5 and 7 were investigated to show whether they are suited as CVD (= chemical vapor deposition) and/or spin-coating precursors for MgO or ZnO layer formation.

Crystal structure of (2-acetyl-ferrocen-1-yl)boronic acid.

(2-Acetyl-ferrocen-1-yl)boronic acid, [Fe(CH)(CHBO)] or 2-C(O)CH-1-B(OH)-Fc [Fc = Fe(η-CH)(η-CH)], crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group 2/. The boronic acid functionality inter-acts intra-molecular hydrogen bonds with the acetyl group and with the -B(OH) functionality of an adjacent mol-ecule. The resulting centrosymmetric dimer exhibits an -positioning of the ferrocenyl moieties towards the central BO plane.

Onychomycosis is a fungal nail infection caused primarily by the dermatophytes Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton interdigitale or, less frequently, by molds like Aspergillus spp. and Scopulariopsis brevicaulis. Photodynamic treatment of onychomycosis is considered a promising future therapy to overcome the frequent failure of currently used antifungals.

Training emotion regulation through real-time fMRI neurofeedback of amygdala activity.

Being in control of one's emotions is not only desirable in many everyday situations but is also a great challenge in a variety of mental disorders. Successful intentional emotion regulation is related to down-regulation of amygdala activity. Training mental interventions supported by neurofeedback of one's own amygdala activity using real-time (rt-)fMRI might be beneficial for mental health and well-being.

Male offspring born to mildly ZIKV-infected mice are at risk of developing neurocognitive disorders in adulthood.

Congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) syndrome may cause fetal microcephaly in ~1% of affected newborns. Here, we investigate whether the majority of clinically inapparent newborns might suffer from long-term health impairments not readily visible at birth. Infection of immunocompetent pregnant mice with high-dose ZIKV caused severe offspring phenotypes, such as fetal death, as expected.

Polymer membranes are powerful filtration tools in medicine and water treatment. Their efficiency and operational lifetime is limited by biofouling caused by microorganisms. This study describes the development of photodynamical active antimicrobial polymer membranes in a one-pot functionalization step using a well-known photosensitizer (PS).
