Biomedical engineering research efforts have accomplished another level of a "technological solution" for diabetes: an artificial pancreas to be used by patients and supervised by healthcare professionals at any time and place. Reliability of continuous glucose monitoring, availability of real-time programmable insulin pumps, and validation of safe and efficient control algorithms are critical components for achieving that goal. Nevertheless, the development and integration of these new technologies within a telemedicine system can be the basis of a future artificial pancreas.

The earliest hemodynamic abnormality found in normotensive renal patients was a raised circulating blood volume and an increased cardiac output. The blood pressure remained normal as long as the peripheral vascular bed (arteriolar and venous) adjusted to these conditions.

All patients underwent two identical scintigrams with the same work load during bicycle ergometry; a control scintigram leading to angina and ST-depressions of greater than 0.1 mV was followed 4--6 weeks later by a scintigram after ISDN; all drugs -- except sublingual nitroglycerin -- were withheld for an entire week.
