People with Parkinson's disease (PD) are at risk for stigma. The stigma theory suggests four stigma types: public stigma, self-stigma, stigma by association, and structural stigma. The purposes of this study were to understand how people with PD and caregivers perceived and experienced stigma, review the literature and scan social media for evidence of stigma and PD, and examine the interrelationships between stigma types.

Which method for femoral component sizing when performing kinematic alignment TKA? An in silico study.

Introduction: The kinematically alignment (KA) technique for TKA aims to reproduce the pre-arthritic knee anatomy, including both the femoro-tibial and femoro-patellar joints. An in silico study was conducted to compare 3 different femoral component sizing techniques to identify the anatomical landmark which allows closest restoration of the native trochlear anatomy. Our study's question was: what was the best method for sizing the femoral component when performing KA-TKA? It was hypothesized that sizing the femoral component by aiming to restore the groove height would be the best method to restore the native trochlear anatomy.

Anaesthetist prediction of postoperative opioid use: a multicentre prospective cohort study.

Background: The Apfel simplified risk score includes four risk factors: female sex, non-smoking status, postoperative nausea and vomiting or motion sickness history, and postoperative opioid use. The score is calculated preoperatively, so postoperative opioid use must be predicted. We aimed to determine whether anaesthetists can predict patients' postoperative opioid use and dose.

Metabolic Profile Reflects Stages of Fibrosis in Patients with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, with fibrosis stage being the main predictor for clinical outcomes. Here, we present the metabolic profile of NAFLD patients with regards to fibrosis progression. We included all consecutive new referrals for NAFLD services between 2011 and 2019.

Climate change is thought to be one of the greatest public health threats of the 21st century and there has been a tremendous growth in the published literature describing the health implications of climate change over the last decade. Yet, there remain several critical knowledge gaps in this field. Closing these gaps is crucial to developing effective interventions to minimize the health risks from climate change.

A high-resolution landscape of mutations in the super-enhancer in normal human B cells.

The super-enhancers (SEs) of lineage-specific genes in B cells are off-target sites of somatic hypermutation. However, the inability to detect sufficient numbers of mutations in normal human B cells has precluded the generation of a high-resolution mutational landscape of SEs. Here we captured and sequenced 12 B cell SEs at single-nucleotide resolution from 10 healthy individuals across diverse ethnicities.

COMP Report: A survey of radiation safety regulations for medical imaging x-ray equipment in Canada.

X-ray regulations and room design methodology vary widely across Canada. The Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists (COMP) conducted a survey in 2016/2017 to provide a useful snapshot of existing variations in rules and methodologies for human patient medical imaging facilities. Some jurisdictions no longer have radiation safety regulatory requirements and COMP is concerned that lack of regulatory oversight might erode safe practices.

This study examined the relationship between behavioral and psychological aspects of exercise and eating disorder recovery. Participants were categorized as having an eating disorder (n = 53), partially recovered (n = 15), fully recovered (n = 20), or non-eating disorder controls (n = 67). Groups did not differ significantly in time spent exercising, but did differ in exercise intensity, guilt-related exercise, obsessive exercise cognitions, and appearance/weight management and stress/mood management motivations for exercise.

TNF is now understood to play a contextual role in driving either tumor elimination or promotion. Using both animal and human data, this review examines the role of TNF in cancer development and the effect of TNF and TNF inhibitors (TNFis) on malignancy risk.

The sperm of aging male bustards retards their offspring's development.

Understanding whether the sperm of older males has a diminished capacity to produce successful offspring is a key challenge in evolutionary biology. We investigate this issue using 10 years of reproductive data on captive long-lived houbara bustards (Chlamydotis undulata), where the use of artificial insemination techniques means parents can only influence offspring quality via their gametes. Here we show that paternal aging reduces both the likelihood that eggs hatch and the rate at which chicks grow, with older males producing the lightest offspring after the first month.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine how sensitive dental specialists and laypeople are to maxillary incisor crowding when viewed from the front.

Methods: Computer technology was used to create a series of photographs of the incisors of a smiling woman viewed from the front. The photographs showed varying degrees of maxillary incisor crowding classified according to Little's irregularity index (LII).

Improvements in concentration, working memory and sustained attention following consumption of a natural citicoline-caffeine beverage.

This study examined the neurocognitive and electrophysiological effects of a citicoline-caffeine-based beverage in 60 healthy adult participants enrolled in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Measures of electrical brain activity using electroencephalogram (EEG) and neuropsychological measures examining attention, concentration and reaction time were administered. Compared to placebo, participants receiving the citicoline-caffeine beverage exhibited significantly faster maze learning times and reaction times on a continuous performance test, fewer errors in a go/no-go task and better accuracy on a measure of information processing speed.

DNA polymerases (Pols) ε and δ perform the bulk of yeast leading- and lagging-strand DNA synthesis. Both Pols possess intrinsic proofreading exonucleases that edit errors during polymerization. Rare errors that elude proofreading are extended into duplex DNA and excised by the mismatch repair (MMR) system.
