[Ultrasound duplex scanning in the assessment of the effectiveness of gravitation therapy and conservative treatment of patients with atherosclerosis obliterans of the lower extremities].

Ultrasound duplex scanning was used to compare the results of the treatment of 162 patients suffering from atherosclerosis obliterans of the lower extremities. It is to be noted that 50 patients were administered only gravitation therapy, 72 patients underwent a complex of treatment measures including, in addition to gravitation therapy, physiotherapy and drug treatment, and 40 patients received conservative treatment alone. The assessment criteria were the maximal systolic velocity of blood flow (V(max)), end diastolic mean, velocity (V(min)), mean maximal velocity (V(mean)), volume velocity of blood flow (V(vol)), ankle/brachial index (ABI), and index of regional perfusion (IRP), proposed by us and representing the percent ratio of the volume velocity of blood flow to the minute heart volume (MHV).

It has been established by the studies on the composition of arenarine that the previously identified high-active substance is not an individual one but consists of seven active components. Certain properties of these components are presented.

[Action of acyclovir on cytomegalovirus in tissue culture and in chronic infection in women].

Acyclovir was capable to delay for some time the development of the cytopathic effect in cell cultures. When acyclovir was added to the infected tube cultures in a concentration of 250 micrograms/ml, virus reproduction was inhibited for 6 days. Then foci of lesions were observed, and by the 12-13th days the intensity of involvement of the cell layer was 80-90% and did not differ from that in control tubes infected with cytomegalovirus (CMV).

[Cultivation of the rabies virus in the continuous kidney cell line 4647 from the green marmoset].

Continuous cells of green monkey kidney 4647 were found to be highly sensitive to three variants of the Vnukovo-32 vaccine strain of rabies virus preliminarily adapted to the primary line of Syrian hamster kidney cells. The virus litre increased with passages in the 4647 cell culture. The resulting virus variants had sufficient immunogenic potency.

[Various quantitative characteristics of the pathoarchitectonics of the cerebral cortex in Pick disease and Alzheimer disease].

On the basis of the study of the pathological architectonics of 6 brain hemispheres in Pick's disease (PD) and 4 hemispheres in Alzheimer's disease (AD), the author presents data on changes in the size of the surface of the hemispheres on the whole and of individual areas and compares them with the mean figures. It is concluded that the degenerative, atrophic process in both groups of presenile dementia involves the entire brain cortex: the indices of the area of the entire hemisphere in all the cases studied were below the mean values. The surface of the cortex was shrinked in both phylogenetically new areas (inferior occipital, frontal and temporal) and phylogenetically older regions (pre- and postcentral, occipital), as well as in the limbic and insular regions.

[Spontaneous cytomegalovirus infection of kidney cell cultures of green monkeys].

In subcultivation of 104 batches of primary kidney cell cultures from clinically normal green monkeys 66 batches (47%) showed cytopathic changes indicating spontaneous virus contamination of the cultures. Sixty-six strains were isolated and the properties of 23 cytopathic strains were studied. Electron microscopic examinations of 6 virus isolates identified them as members of the herpesvirus group.

[Interferon production in suspensions of swine and human leukocytes on media containing aminopeptide, hemohydrolysate and bovine amniotic fluid].

Production of different kinds of interferon in imported media (medium 199, Eagle's medium) greatly impedes the organization of large-scale interferon production in this country. The search for national substitutes of these media is important therefore. This paper deals with a comparative study of the use of national aminopeptide and hemohydrolysate preparations for interferon production.
