Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is classically characterized as an autoimmune disease wherein the immune system erroneously attacks insulin-producing pancreatic β-cells, causing insulin insufficiency and severe metabolic dysregulation. However, intensive investigation and numerous clinical trials with immunotherapies have been largely unable to significantly alter the course of disease. Currently, there is no effective way to prevent or cure T1D, and insulin remains the cornerstone of T1D treatment.

Background: Pluripotent cell-derived islet replacement therapy offers promise for treating Type 1 diabetes (T1D), but concerns about uncontrolled cell proliferation and tumorigenicity present significant safety challenges. Health equity is a concept that has gained increasing attention and relevance in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exposed and exacerbated the health disparities and inequities among different population groups in the United States. This article aims to provide a comprehensive and critical overview of the historical, theoretical, and empirical foundations of health equity, as well as the challenges and opportunities for advancing it in the modern US society. By adopting an interdisciplinary and intersectional approach, and by drawing on literature from public health, sociology, economics, and human rights, we argue that health equity is not only a matter of fairness and justice, but also a strategic and pragmatic goal for improving the health and well-being of the entire nation.

Introduction: Many people, often older adults, living in long-term care homes (OA-LTCH) became socially isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic due to variable restrictions on in-person visits and challenges associated with using technology for social connectivity. Importance: Questions have emerged as to whether standard intranasal naloxone dosing recommendations (ie, 1 dose with readministration every 2-3 minutes if needed) are adequate in the era of illicitly manufactured fentanyl and its derivatives (hereinafter, fentanyl).

Levels of circulating fatty acid binding protein 4 (FABP4) protein are strongly associated with obesity and metabolic disease in both mice and humans, and secretion is stimulated by β-adrenergic stimulation both in vivo and in vitro. Previously, lipolysis-induced FABP4 secretion was found to be significantly reduced upon pharmacological inhibition of adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) and was absent from adipose tissue explants from mice specifically lacking ATGL in their adipocytes (ATGL). Here, we find that upon activation of β-adrenergic receptors in vivo, ATGL mice unexpectedly exhibited significantly higher levels of circulating FABP4 as compared with ATGL controls, despite no corresponding induction of lipolysis.

The COVID-19 pandemic increased social isolation for many older adults, causing concern for their health and well-being. To enhance understanding of how community-dwelling older adults were impacted by prolonged social isolation during COVID-19, a qualitative descriptive study was conducted to: (1) explore the self-reported factors supporting their resilience during COVID-19 related social isolation, and (2) to help understand the intentional and unintentional outcomes of the government mandated health measures. Background: Dermoscopy is commonly used for the evaluation of pigmented lesions, but agreement between experts for identification of dermoscopic structures is known to be relatively poor. Expert labeling of medical data is a bottleneck in the development of machine learning (ML) tools, and crowdsourcing has been demonstrated as a cost- and time-efficient method for the annotation of medical images.

Objective: The aim of this study is to demonstrate that crowdsourcing can be used to label basic dermoscopic structures from images of pigmented lesions with similar reliability to a group of experts.
