Background: Unstable phalangeal fractures are commonly treated with K-wire fixation. Operative fixation must be used judiciously and with the expectation that the ultimate outcome should be better than the outcome after nonoperative management. It is necessary to achieve a stable fracture fixation and early mobilization.

Aim: To assess platelet activation in south Indian type 2 diabetic subjects with and without CAD.

Methods: Four groups of subjects were studied; Group 1 comprised of non-diabetic subjects without coronary artery disease (CAD) (n = 30). Type 2 diabetic subjects without CAD formed Group 2 (n = 30); Group 3 comprised of type 2 diabetic subjects with CAD (n = 30) and Group 4 consisted of non- diabetic subjects with CAD (n=14).

Purpose: To investigate the effect of high glucose on the proliferation of human retinal endothelial cells (HRECs) and to elucidate the possible mechanisms of antiangiogenic activity of curcumin, a diferuloylmethane.

Methods: Human retinal endothelial cells were isolated from the retinal tissue obtained from human donors and the culture system was established. The effect of curcumin on the proliferation of primary HRECs in the presence of low and high glucose was measured by MTT and thymidine uptake assays.

Formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) is an important mechanism by which chronic exposure to high glucose levels leads to vascular complications. Measurement of AGEs is hence of great importance for clinicians and researchers concerned with the management and prevention of diabetic vascular disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate a simple methodology to detect AGEs in the serum and to correlate their levels with diabetes and microangiopathy, specifically retinopathy and nephropathy.

Blood cells from subjects with hypertension and/or diabetes mellitus have been successfully studied in the past to gain insight into pathological alterations of several signal transduction pathways. Diabetes mellitus is also considered to be a disease of abnormal cellular Ca2+ metabolism, as metabolic derangements of Ca2+ transport have been noticed both in the prediabetic state and as a consequence of hyperglycemia and oxidative stress. In this report, we used peripheral blood lymphocytes from type 2 diabetes patients and control subjects to study and delineate different mechanisms of Ca2+ turnover that determine the level of cytosolic calcium (Ca(i)).
