Purpose: To evaluate differences in physical characteristics and sealing ability of root-end-fillings made with these materials compared to the gold standard (ProRoot MTA).

Methods: The physical characteristics of ProRoot MTA, Medcem MTA and Biodentine were evaluated regarding setting time, flow, film thickness, solubility and radiopacity according to the German Institute for Standardization (EN-ISO 6878). To investigate their sealing ability as root-end-fillings, a glucose penetration model was used.

Introduction: Computed tomography of the lung has shown that ventilation shifts from dependent to nondependent lung regions. In this study, we investigated whether, at the bedside, electrical impedance tomography (EIT) at the cranial and caudal thoracic levels can be used to visualize changes in ventilation distribution during a decremental positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) trial and the relation of these changes to global compliance in mechanically ventilated patients.

Methods: Ventilation distribution was calculated on the basis of EIT results from 12 mechanically ventilated patients after cardiac surgery at a cardiothoracic ICU.

Experimental case report: development of a pneumothorax monitored by electrical impedance tomography.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive, radiation-free functional imaging technique, which allows continuous bedside measurement of regional lung ventilation. Pneumothorax is an uncommon but nevertheless potentially dangerous incident that may arise unexpectedly. We report an incident of an accidental tension pneumothorax during an experimental ventilation study in a pig that was continuously monitored by EIT.

Reconciling diabetes management and the ketogenic diet in a child with pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency.

A 4-year-old girl with pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency, static encephalopathy, and seizure disorder treated with the ketogenic diet presented in severe diabetic ketoacidosis. Pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency is a rare genetic defect of mitochondrial energy metabolism that leads to inefficient glucose use and lactic acidosis. The ketogenic diet provides the brain with an alternate fuel source, but its implementation opposes traditional diabetes management.

Reporting medical neglect effectively: a guide for nurse practitioners working with child protective services.

Health care providers who suspect or observe medical neglect of chronic health problems in children are obligated to report the findings to Child Protective Services (CPS). Such reporting results in uneasiness for clinicians, who may jeopardize their therapeutic relationships with the patient and family, or worse, provoke them to withdraw from treatment. To the contrary, reporting medical neglect and discussing it openly and empathetically with the family can foster more cohesive teamwork and prompt families to address their problems.

Autoclaving impairs the connector-tube bond of the laryngeal mask airway but not its airtightness.

The general-purpose laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is re-usable when undamaged, and cleaned and autoclaved correctly. We had found weakening of the silicone adhesive that bonds the connector of the LMA to the tube. We report that repeated autoclaving damaged the adhesive such that the connector could be rotated in the tube after the 12th autoclave cycle in almost all of the LMA tested.

Severe pneumothorax after intercostal nerve blockade. A case report.

Background: Intercostal nerve blockade is recognized as an efficient and safe regional anesthetic technique. Although an appropriate technique was applied, we report a severe pneumothorax associated with this type of regional anesthesia.
