A hybrid satellite-terrestrial relay network is a simple and flexible solution that can be used to improve the performance of land mobile satellite systems, where the communication links between satellite and mobile terrestrial users can be unstable due to the multipath effect, obstacles, as well as the additional atmospheric losses. Motivated by these facts, in this paper, we analyze a system where the satellite-terrestrial links undergo shadowed Rice fading, and, following this, terrestrial relay applies the selection relaying protocol and forwards the information to the final destination using the communication link subjected to Nakagami- fading. For the considered relaying protocol, we derive the exact closed-form expressions for the outage probability, outage capacity, and ergodic capacity, presented in polynomial-exponential form for the integer-valued fading parameters.

The relentless expansion of communications services and applications in 5G networks and their further projected growth bring the challenge of necessary spectrum scarcity, a challenge which might be overcome using the concept of cognitive radio. Furthermore, an extremely high number of low-power devices are introduced by the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), which also requires efficient energy usage and practically applicable device powering. Motivated by these facts, in this paper, we analyze a wirelessly powered underlay cognitive system based on a realistic case in which statistical channel state information (CSI) is available.

We propose a novel variant of the gradient descent bit-flipping (GDBF) algorithm for decoding low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over the binary symmetric channel. The new bit-flipping rule is based on the reliability information passed from neighboring nodes in the corresponding Tanner graph. The name reflects the main feature of the algorithm-that in every iteration, we assign a level of suspicion to each variable node about its current bit value.

The relentlessly increasing number of small-sized devices with limited powering and computational capabilities requires the adoption of new approaches to spectrum access. In this paper, we analyze an underlay cooperative cognitive wireless system based on available statistical channel state information (CSI) that is applicable to the cognitive system with limited computational resources due to its low complexity. We considered the scenario where the primary and the cognitive network coexist in the same spectrum band, under the constraints of interference threshold and maximal tolerable outage permitted by the primary user.
