Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of two EEG-derived indices, qCON and qNOX, in monitoring pediatric patients during surgery under general anesthesia, particularly during induction and recovery periods.
  • A total of 46 patients aged 1-12 years underwent elective surgeries, with their brain activity monitored using the CONOX system while sevoflurane was used for anesthesia.
  • Results showed that both indices demonstrated a simultaneous decrease and increase during anesthesia induction and recovery, with qNOX increasing significantly during surgical incision, but neither index strongly correlated with the sevoflurane dosage.

belongs to the Rosaceae family and has numerous therapeutic applications as potent plant-based medicine. Forty phytoconstituents (PCs) from the root and stem through n-hexane (NR and NS) and methanolic (MR and MS) extracts were identified in earlier studies. However, the PCs affecting human genes and their roles in the body have not previously been disclosed.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a commonly occurring, multifactorial disease characterized by reduced tear film stability and hyperosmolarity at the ocular surface, leading to discomfort and visual compromise. DED is driven by chronic inflammation and its pathogenesis involves multiple ocular surface structures such as the cornea, conjunctiva, lacrimal glands, and meibomian glands. The tear film secretion and its composition are regulated by the ocular surface in orchestration with the environment and bodily cues.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed electronic health records of nearly 90,000 COVID-19 patients to identify risk factors for long COVID, finding a higher prevalence of chronic pulmonary disease, migraine, and fibromyalgia among those diagnosed with long COVID compared to matched controls.
  • Long COVID patients displayed significant abnormalities in lab results during their acute infection, including high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and a higher neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, alongside a greater hospitalization rate.
  • The research suggests that both the severity of the acute infection and existing health conditions may increase the likelihood of long COVID symptoms, highlighting the need for further studies on managing acute disease to potentially minimize long COVID occurrences.

Background: Tracheo-bronchomalacia (TBM) is the weakness in the structural integrity of the cartilaginous ring and arch. It may occur in isolation with prematurity or secondarily in association with various congenital anomalies. Bronchomalacia is more commonly associated with congenital heart diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for patients with advanced achalasia cardia, specifically those with sigmoid and megaesophagus.
  • A systematic review of 11 studies involving 428 patients showed a high technical success rate (98.27%) and a clinical success rate of 89.38%.
  • Results indicate significant improvements in various clinical scores post-POEM, confirming that this treatment is effective for advanced cases of achalasia cardia.

Typically, prosthodontists adjust ceramic restorations glazed surface by grinding prior to insertion. Such alterations of surfaces are necessary for the correction of occlusal interferences. We aimed to evaluate and compare the change in flexural strength of ceramic surfaces after re-glazing and polishing.

Background And Aims: Iron deficiency anaemia, although well reported in diabetic nephropathy, has not been well studied in type 2 diabetes patients in the absence of nephropathy. We studied the prevalence of anaemia and iron deficiency in type 2 diabetes patients without nephropathy.

Material And Methods: A total of 89 patients were selected for this study.

The detection of biomolecules such as dopamine (DA), ascorbic acid (AA), serotonin (5-HT), and guanine (GU) is essential for biomedical chemistry and disease diagnosis. In this work, MoS/acid-treated MWCNTs composite (Ms-atCNTs) was first prepared and then used to modify carbon paste electrode (CPE), followed by electropolymerization of alanine in the presence of NaOH. The resulting modified electrode (p-Aln/Ms-atCNTCPE) was tested for the simultaneous detection of DA, AA, 5-HT, and GU using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry in phosphate buffer solution (PBS).

The study was undertaken to identify the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) governing yield and its related traits using a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from the popular rice hybrid, KRH-2 (IR58025A/KMR3R). A genetic map spanning 294.2 cM was constructed with 126 simple sequence repeats (SSR) loci uniformly distributed across the rice genome.

Purpose: To measure levels of collagen-derived antiangiogenic factors (arresten, canstatin, tumstatin, endostatin) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) in anterior lens epithelial cells (LECs) and anterior capsules of children with cataract and persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) as cases and cataract without PFV as controls.

Methods: Anterior capsules harboring LECs were collected from pediatric cataract patients with (n = 13) and without PFV (n = 13) during surgery. Samples were immediately subjected to RNA extraction and cDNA preparation.
