A major concern of hospices treating AIDS patients is survival prognosis. Patients are eligible for government hospice benefits only if they are in the last six months of life, but for AIDS patients who present at different disease stages, it is often difficult to predict survival. We have tested an index of AIDS severity developed by Alemi et al.

Long-term pretreatment with pentoxifylline increases random skin flap survival.

Optimizing survival of random skin flaps is essential to ensure successful rehabilitation of patients in whom flap reconstruction is necessary. This study tested the hypothesis that pentoxifylline improves random skin flap survival in porcine dorsal flank flaps when administered for at least 2 weeks preoperatively. Pharmacologic enhancement of random skin flap survival by prostaglandin E2.

Protein kinase C-dependent phosphorylation of a ciliary membrane protein and inhibition of ciliary beating.

The present study examined whether protein kinase C phosphorylated a ciliary protein and whether this phosphorylation event was temporally correlated with a decrease in ciliary beat frequency. Activation of protein kinase C decreased ciliary beat frequency of sheep tracheal epithelium, an effect fully blockable by pretreatment of the tissue pieces with H-7, a protein kinase inhibitor. Using cilia removed from these epithelial surfaces and incubated in solutions containing stimulators of protein kinase C along with [gamma-32P]ATP or [gamma-35S]ATP, a single protein target of ciliary protein kinase C activity was identified.

Documented need for more effective diagnosis and treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia according to data from 502 heterozygotes in Utah.

A project to help Utah residents with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) identified affected individuals by collecting detailed questionnaires from: (1) very high-risk persons in computer files of screening data (very high cholesterol levels, very early coronary artery disease, and strong positive family history); (2) confirmed FH index cases from a university lipid clinic; and (3) relatives of any confirmed FH cases. Questionnaires were received from 2,143 persons identifying 101 living index cases and 502 relatives meeting the criteria for the diagnosis of FH. Finding new FH heterozygotes was about one fourth as expensive by tracing relatives of confirmed FH cases by evaluating very high-risk persons.

Cyclic AMP-dependent phosphorylation of a 26 kD axonemal protein in ovine cilia isolated from small tissue pieces.

To study cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent phosphorylation events in ovine cilia in vitro, we adapted published axonemal isolation methods to obtain pure mammalian axonemal proteins from small ovine tracheal mucosa pieces with a surface area of only 1 cm2. The isolated axonemes could be reactivated in vitro upon ATP addition, thereby attesting to their functional integrity. The axonemal protein yield from these small mucosa pieces was high enough to allow protein concentration measurements of each sample and axonemal polypeptide analysis by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE).

Murine P19 embryonal carcinoma cells irreversibly differentiate into neuroectoderm following brief exposure to retinoic acid (RA). We compared the expression of RA-responsive genes in P19 cells and in a mutant cell line from mouse, RAC65, which fails to differentiate in RA. Some RA-responsive genes were normally regulated by RA in RAC65 cells while others were not.

Contact dermatitis from beryllium in dental alloys.

An increasing number of metals with the potential to cause allergic contact dermatitis have found their way into dental alloys for economic and practical reasons. 2 patients are reported who developed gingivitis adjacent to the Rexillium III alloy in their dental prostheses. Patch testing demonstrated positive reactions to beryllium sulfate, a component of the alloy.

A novel vesicle-associated protein (VAP-1) in sea urchin eggs containing multiple RNA-binding consensus sequences.

We have identified a novel high molecular weight, vesicle-associated protein (VAP-1) in the eggs of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. Biochemical fractionation and immunofluorescence analysis of unfertilized eggs indicate that VAP-1 is a peripheral membrane protein associated with microsomal membrane fractions. Sequence analysis of partial VAP-1 cDNA clones reveals that the protein contains at least four RNA-binding consensus sequences.

Effect of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors on erythropoietin concentrations in healthy volunteers.

The possibility that the ACE inhibitors, enalapril and captopril, may decrease plasma EPO concentrations was studied in a single-blind, cross-over study in 10 healthy volunteers. Plasma EPO concentrations, haemoglobin concentration, red blood cell count, plasma creatinine concentration and mean arterial pressure were measured at baseline and after 28 days treatment with both ACE inhibitors. A significant fall in mean plasma EPO concentration occurred with both ACE inhibitors and returned to baseline after stopping the drugs.

Four systems for analyzing thinking about 2 personal-life dilemmas, as discussed by 29 men and 35 women (ages 35-85), were compared. Kohlberg's (1976) moral judgment stages, Kegan's (1982) ego-development stages, Gilligan's (1982) moral orientation system, and Suedfeld and Tetlock's (1977) integrative complexity scoring were used. Subjects completed Kohlberg's (Colby & Kohlberg, 1987) standard moral judgment measure, a self-concept description, and several questionnaires.

An investigation of the safety of the blood reinfusion step used with tunneled venous access devices in children with cancer.

Infection has been identified as the most serious potential complication of the indwelling catheter. As a result, the primary nursing goal using the catheters is to prevent infection. Nurses must frequently manipulate the catheters when securing blood specimens and are concerned that this manipulation may serve as a source of infection for the immunocompromised pediatric oncology patient.

Listeria monocytogenes Contamination of Turkey Franks: Evaluation of a Production Facility.
