Malnutrition in children and its determinants: a study from east India.

Malnutrition continues to be a major killer of children, predominantly in low- and middle-income countries such as India. An ecological study was undertaken to correlate different demographic factors with the prevalence of underweight children. Based on findings from the National Family Health Survey 4 (2015-2016), 81 districts were analysed from three states in the eastern part of India.

Information geometry and quantum phase transitions in the Dicke model.

We study information geometry of the Dicke model, in the thermodynamic limit. The scalar curvature R of the Riemannian metric tensor induced on the parameter space of the model is calculated. We analyze this both with and without the rotating wave approximation, and show that the parameter manifold is smooth even at the phase transition, and that the scalar curvature is continuous across the phase boundary.

Localization of Dirac-like excitations in graphene in the presence of smooth inhomogeneous magnetic fields.

The present paper discusses magnetic confinement of the Dirac excitations in graphene in the presence of inhomogeneous magnetic fields. In the first case a magnetic field directed along the z axis whose magnitude is proportional to 1/r is chosen. In the next case we choose a more realistic magnetic field which does not blow up at the origin and gradually fades away from the origin.

On two novel parameters for validation of predictive QSAR models.

Validation is a crucial aspect of quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modeling. The present paper shows that traditionally used validation parameters (leave-one-out Q(2) for internal validation and predictive R(2) for external validation) may be supplemented with two novel parameters r(m)(2) and R(p)(2) for a stricter test of validation. The parameter r(m)(2)((overall)) penalizes a model for large differences between observed and predicted values of the compounds of the whole set (considering both training and test sets) while the parameter R(p)(2) penalizes model R(2) for large differences between determination coefficient of nonrandom model and square of mean correlation coefficient of random models in case of a randomization test.

Comparative chemometric modeling of cytochrome 3A4 inhibitory activity of structurally diverse compounds using stepwise MLR, FA-MLR, PLS, GFA, G/PLS and ANN techniques.

Twenty-eight structurally diverse cytochrome 3A4 (CYP3A4) inhibitors have been subjected to quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) studies. The analyses were performed with electronic, spatial, topological, and thermodynamic descriptors calculated using Cerius 2 version 10 software. The statistical tools used were linear [multiple linear regression with factor analysis as preprocessing step (FA-MLR), stepwise MLR, partial least squares (PLS), genetic function algorithm (GFA), genetic PLS (G/PLS)] and non-linear methods [artificial neural network (ANN)].

Phylogenetic analysis of the p24-p7 region of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 gag gene to determine subtype distribution among female sex workers in Calcutta, India.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) subtype C, based on the envelope region, has been reported to be predominant in India. We sequenced the p24-p7 gag region from 51 HIV-1 seropositive female sex workers in Calcutta, India, for more-detailed molecular characterization. Subtype C was found to be prevalent, although no strong monophyletic cluster was observed.
