Article Synopsis
  • A case study details the occurrence of ectopic salivary gland tissue in the rectum of a healthy 30-year-old male, discovered during investigation for rectal bleeding.
  • The patient underwent a colonoscopy and biopsy, revealing the presence of this rare tissue alongside hyperplastic rectal mucosa.
  • Despite the unusual finding, the patient's symptoms improved after the diagnosis, with no recurrence of bleeding noted, leading to the conclusion that such ectopic tissue may arise from metaplasia or developmental issues, necessitating excision and monitoring as treatment.

A 54-year-old man presented with rectal pain and bleeding secondary to ulcerated, necrotic rectal and cecal masses that resembled colorectal carcinoma upon colonoscopy. These masses were later determined to be benign amebomas caused by invasive Entamoeba histolytica, which regressed completely with medical therapy. In Western countries, the occurrence of invasive protozoan infection with formation of amebomas is very rare and can mistakenly masquerade as a neoplasm.
