A 2-month-old domestic shorthair kitten was presented for evaluation of weakness, gait abnormalities, and signs of pain after trauma. On admission, the patient was found laterally recumbent with obvious gait abnormalities: difficulty rising from sitting and marked unilateral left hind limb lameness. On orthopedic examination, severe pain, crepitations, and swelling of the left hind limb were detected.

Frequency-Dependent Squeezed Vacuum Source for Broadband Quantum Noise Reduction in Advanced Gravitational-Wave Detectors.

The astrophysical reach of current and future ground-based gravitational-wave detectors is mostly limited by quantum noise, induced by vacuum fluctuations entering the detector output port. The replacement of this ordinary vacuum field with a squeezed vacuum field has proven to be an effective strategy to mitigate such quantum noise and it is currently used in advanced detectors. However, current squeezing cannot improve the noise across the whole spectrum because of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle: when shot noise at high frequencies is reduced, radiation pressure at low frequencies is increased.

Charge-Induced Force Noise on Free-Falling Test Masses: Results from LISA Pathfinder.

We report on electrostatic measurements made on board the European Space Agency mission LISA Pathfinder. Detailed measurements of the charge-induced electrostatic forces exerted on free-falling test masses (TMs) inside the capacitive gravitational reference sensor are the first made in a relevant environment for a space-based gravitational wave detector. Employing a combination of charge control and electric-field compensation, we show that the level of charge-induced acceleration noise on a single TM can be maintained at a level close to 1.

Sub-Femto-g Free Fall for Space-Based Gravitational Wave Observatories: LISA Pathfinder Results.

We report the first results of the LISA Pathfinder in-flight experiment. The results demonstrate that two free-falling reference test masses, such as those needed for a space-based gravitational wave observatory like LISA, can be put in free fall with a relative acceleration noise with a square root of the power spectral density of 5.2±0.

Model-based knowledge acquisition in environmental decision support system for wastewater integrated management.

The main goal of the Water Framework Directive is to achieve good chemical and ecological status of water bodies by 2015. The implementation of integrated river basin management, including sewer systems, wastewater treatment plants and receiving water bodies, is essential to accomplishing this objective. Integrated management is complex and therefore the implementation of control systems and the development of decision support systems are needed to facilitate the work of urban wastewater system (UWS) managers.

A new rule generation method to develop a decision support system for integrated management at river basin scale.

The Besòs River Basin authority is working towards the implementation of integrated river basin management, as required by the Water Framework Directive (WFD), to achieve a good ecological and chemical status of all water bodies by 2015. The studied system is constituted by two communities (La Garriga and Granollers), their corresponding draining catchments, sewer systems and two WWTPs, which discharge treated water at different locations of the same river. Within this context, the realisation of an integrated model of the river stretch and of the two WWTPs with their sewer systems and draining catchments was necessary.

Role playing games: a methodology to acquire knowledge for integrated wastewater infrastructures management in a river basin scale.

Current management of sanitation infrastructures (sewer systems, wastewater treatment plant, receiving water, bypasses, deposits, etc) is not fulfilling the objectives of up to date legislation, to achieve a good ecological and chemical status of water bodies through integrated management. These made it necessary to develop new methodologies that help decision makers to improve the management in order to achieve that status. Decision Support Systems (DSS) based on Multi-Agent System (MAS) paradigm are promising tools to improve the integrated management.

Endoscopy of mandibular cysts after cystostomy: a preliminary report.

Purpose: This study evaluated the use of endoscopy to explore mandibular cysts after cystostomy.

Materials And Methods: Six mandibular cysts were explored with a fiber endoscope immediately after cystostomy, allowing evaluation of the appearance of the cyst lining and biopsies to be performed.

Results: The lining of the cyst wall had a pearly appearance.

The authors report a case of anaplastic carcinoma with amyloid stroma, accompanied by the secretion of calcitonin, detected in a cervical lymph node and initially interpreted as being a metastasis from a medullary carcinoma of the thyroid. The actual pancreatic origin of the malignant tumour was proved only during the advanced stages. Ultrastructural study confirmed the endocrine nature of the tumour (neurosecretory granules).

A casuistic study of 241 epidermoid cancers of the uterine cervix treated at the Cancer Center in Nice is analysed depending upon various protocols. The cases are studied according to the stage and type of treatment, with indication of the incidence of lymph node involvement. Surgical or radiological procedure, pelvic-node-vaginal recurrence, modalities of death and survival control at five years are detailed.
