Background: The renin angiotensin system (RAS) is implicated in various cognitive processes relevant to anxiety. However, the role of the RAS in pattern separation, a hippocampal memory mechanism that enables discrete encoding of similar stimuli, is unclear. Given the proposed role of this mechanism in overgeneralization and the maintenance of anxiety, we explored the influence of the RAS on mnemonic discrimination i.

Introduction: Prosthetic silicone liners improve comfort and skin protection and allow the use of total surface bearing (TSB) sockets, which provide enhanced proprioception and comfort. Unfortunately, silicone liners are cost-prohibitive in resource-limited environments (RLEs) where patellar tendon bearing (PTB) sockets with PE-lite liners remain standard, leading to patient discomfort and skin issues.

Objective: This study evaluates the benefits and durability of an affordable silicone liner locally manufactured in an RLE to promote TSB socket adoption, aiming to enhance prosthetic care and patient outcomes.

Calcium channel antagonists, specifically long-acting nifedipine formulations, play a crucial role in treating hypertension and angina. Originally used for angina, nifedipine has been widely employed as an antihypertensive medication for over 40 years. It offers rapid action and oral bioavailability with minimal maternal or fetal side effects, making it suitable for treating hypertensive crises during pregnancy.

Adaptive behavior in complex environments requires integrating visual perception with memory of our spatial environment. Recent work has implicated three brain areas in posterior cerebral cortex - the place memory areas (PMAs) that are anterior to the three visual scene perception areas (SPAs) - in this function. However, PMAs' relationship to the broader cortical hierarchy remains unclear due to limited group-level characterization.

Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of somatosensory cortex evokes tactile sensations whose properties can be systematically manipulated by varying stimulation parameters. However, ICMS currently provides an imperfect sense of touch, limiting manual dexterity and tactile experience. Leveraging our understanding of how tactile features are encoded in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), we sought to inform individuals with paralysis about local geometry and apparent motion of objects on their skin.

Background: Glioblastoma (GBM) is a common brain tumor with a poor prognosis. There is a paucity of knowledge regarding optimal treatment approaches for elderly patients with GBM who have a relatively good Karnofsky (KPS) or Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status. This study compared treatment outcomes in older patients (≥65) with GBM based on their performance status, either high (KPS ≥ 70 and ECOG < 2) or low (KPS < 70 and ECOG ≥ 2), who underwent hypofractionated radiotherapy (HFRT) (40 Gy in 15 fractions) versus conventional fractionation (60 Gy in 30 fractions).

Two structurally unrelated small molecule chemotypes, represented by compounds PAV-617 and PAV-951, with antiviral activity in cell culture against Mpox virus (formerly known as monkeypox virus) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) respectively, were studied for anti-cancer efficacy. Each exhibited apparent pan-cancer cytotoxicity with reasonable pharmacokinetics. Non-toxicity is demonstrated in a non-cancer cell line and in mice at doses achieving drug exposure at active concentrations.

The occurrence of cutaneous metastasis from internal malignancies is relatively rare. Furthermore, cutaneous metastasis from gallbladder carcinoma is an infrequent phenomenon, with only a few reported cases. Here, we report a case of a 45-year-old male with cutaneous metastasis from primary gallbladder carcinoma, initially presenting solely with a scrotal lesion.

Tactile feedback from brain-controlled bionic hands can be partially restored via intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of the primary somatosensory cortex. In ICMS, the location of percepts depends on the electrode's location and the percept intensity depends on the stimulation frequency and amplitude. Sensors on a bionic hand can thus be linked to somatotopically appropriate electrodes, and the contact force of each sensor can be used to determine the amplitude of a stimulus.

Background: Modified Bishop score (MBS) and cervical length determination by transvaginal sonography (TVS) are the two methods for predicting successful vaginal delivery based on pre-induction favourability of the cervix.

Aims And Objectives: This study compared both methods for predicting successful vaginal delivery. The primary objective was to compare the predictive value of MBS and TVS in predicting successful induction of labor.

Background: While clinical overlap between Kawasaki disease (KD) and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) has been evident, information regarding those presenting with shock has been limited. We sought to determine associations with shock within and between diagnosis groups.

Methods: The International KD Registry enrolled contemporaneous patients with either KD or MIS-C from 39 sites in 7 countries from January 1, 2020, to January 1, 2023.

Neurological diseases (NDs), including neurodegenerative disorders and acute injuries, are a significant global health concern. The PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, a crucial signaling cascade, is responsible for the survival of cells, proliferation, and metabolism. Dysregulation of this pathway has been linked to neurological conditions, indicating its potential as a vital target for therapeutic approaches.

  • Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the 13th most common cancer, with early detection crucial for better survival rates, but traditional tissue biopsy methods are costly and slow.
  • This study explores the use of transfer learning with pre-trained deep learning models (ResNet-50, VGG16, InceptionV3) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) to classify OSCC in histopathological images.
  • The results showed a high accuracy of 90%, sensitivity of 97%, and an AUC of 94%, indicating the promising feasibility of these methodologies for improving cancer diagnostics in the future.

Aphantasia is a condition characterized by reduced voluntary mental imagery. As this lack of mental imagery disrupts visual memory, understanding the nature of this condition can provide important insight into memory, perception, and imagery. Here, we leveraged the power of case studies to better characterize this condition by running a pair of identical twins, one with aphantasia and one without, through mental imagery tasks in an fMRI scanner.

Article Synopsis
  • Mutations in the PIK3CA/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway are prevalent in metastatic breast cancers (MBCs), leading researchers to investigate how these genetic changes relate to the activation of proteins in this pathway.
  • In a study involving 171 MBC patients, genetic alterations were analyzed through next-generation sequencing, while protein activation levels were measured using advanced proteomic methods to see how they correlated with treatment responses.
  • Results showed that nearly half of the cases had oncogenic alterations, but genetic profiles were not strong predictors of protein activity, highlighting the importance of measuring phosphoprotein levels alongside genomic data for better understanding and treatment of MBCs.
