Oestrogen is a hormone that might make women more likely to get autoimmune diseases like lupus.
Scientists studied special mice that show lupus-like symptoms to understand how oestrogen affects them.
The results showed that when the mice were given oestrogen, they had worse symptoms and more problems with their immune system.
