The use of lipid-based nanoparticles for the delivery of biomacromolecules has attracted considerable attention due to the current interest in protein-based therapeutics. Cubosomes protect the incorporated therapeutics, which are susceptible to degradation by enzymes, thereby improving their bioavailability, and concomitantly enhance cellular uptake. The cubosome nanoparticles presented herein were loaded with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and characterized by small-angle X-ray scattering and dynamic light scattering techniques, while the BSA encapsulation and its release were evaluated .

A leading approach for large-scale electrochemical energy production with minimal global-warming gas emission is to use a renewable source of electricity, such as solar energy, to oxidize water, providing the abundant source of electrons needed in fuel synthesis. We report corrosion-resistant, nanocomposite anodes for the oxidation of water required to produce renewable fuels. Silicon, an earth-abundant element and an efficient photovoltaic material, is protected by atomic layer deposition (ALD) of a highly uniform, 2 nm thick layer of titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) and then coated with an optically transmitting layer of a known catalyst (3 nm iridium).

Forest fires are suggested as a potential and significant source of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), even though no studies to date provide sufficient evidence to confirm forest fires as a source of PCDD/Fs. Recent investigations in Queensland, Australia have identified a widespread contamination of PCDDs (in particular OCDD) in soils and sediments in the coastal region from an unknown source of PCDD/Fs. Queensland is predominately rural; it has few known anthropogenic sources of PCDD/Fs, whereas forest fires are a frequent occurrence.

Concentrations of 2,3,7,8-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were determined in 14 sediment samples collected from four sites in the Mai Po Marshes Nature Reserve (within a RAMSAR Site) and from another six sites in Victoria Harbour and along the Hong Kong coastline. Elevated levels of PCDDs, and particularly OCDD, were detectable in all samples collected from the Mai Po Marshes and five of the six sites. In contrast to PCDDs, PCDFs were mainly found in sediment samples collected from industrial areas (Kwun Tong and To Kwa Wan) in Victoria Harbour.

In recent years, studies on environmental samples with unusual dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) congener profiles were reported from a range of countries. These profiles, characterized by a dominance of octachlorinated dibenzodioxin (OCDD) and relatively low in dibenzofuran (PCDF) concentrations, could not be attributed to known sources or formation processes. In the present study, the processes that result in these unusual profiles were assessed using the concentrations and isomer signatures of PCDDs from dated estuarine sediment cores in Queensland, Australia.

This city is located near an air base that was used for Agent Orange spray missions between 1962 and 1970. Oak-pollen extracts, separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and electrophoretically transferred onto nitrocellulose, demonstrated extensive banding in the absence of human sera or with nonatopic sera with both a horseradish peroxidase-conjugated goat antihuman IgE and 125I-labeled rabbit antihuman IgE. When the nonionic detergent Tween 20 was removed from all incubations and washes, negative banding appeared, corresponding to bands that were clearly visible when Tween 20 had been used as a blocking agent. When Tween 20 was reintroduced, the bands reappeared.
