Untreated and Fe (III)-treated pine needle biochar (PNB) were evaluated at different pH for the removal of toxic crystal violet (CV) dye from synthetic wastewaters. The sorption-desorption of transition metals, B and S onto phyto-biochars prepared from lantana, pine needles and wheat straw by pyrolysis at 300 °C and 450 °C were studied using the batch method. Their sorption-desorption onto phyto-biochars conformed to Freundlich isotherms. Phyto-biochars pyrolyzed at 450 °C had higher sorption capacity for transition metals (Zn, Cu, Fe, and Mn) but lower sorption capacity for S as compared to those pyrolyzed at 300 °C.

The Arabidopsis SUMO E3 ligase gene AtSIZ1 plays important roles in plant response to abiotic stresses as loss of function in AtSIZ1 leads to increased sensitivity to drought, heat and salt stresses. Overexpression of the AtSIZ1 rice homolog, OsSIZ1, leads to increased heat and drought tolerance in bentgrass, suggesting that the function of the E3 ligase SIZ1 is highly conserved in plants and it plays a critical role in abiotic stress responses.
