A whole-brain functional connectivity model of Alzheimer's disease pathology.

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the presence of two proteinopathies, amyloid and tau, which have a cascading effect on the functional and structural organization of the brain.

Methods: In this study, we used a supervised machine learning technique to build a model of functional connections that predicts cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) p-tau/Aβ (the PATH-fc model). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from 289 older adults in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) were utilized for this model.

Aims: Arthroplasty has been shown to generate the most waste among all orthopaedic subspecialties, and it is estimated that hip and knee arthroplasty generate in excess of three million kg of waste annually in the UK. Infectious waste generates up to ten times more CO2 compared with recycled waste, and previous studies have shown that over 90% of waste in the infectious stream is misallocated. We assessed the effect of real-time waste segregation by an unscrubbed team member on waste generation in knee and hip arthroplasty cases, and compared this with a simple educational intervention during the 'team brief' at the start of the operating list across two sites.

ENIGMA-Meditation: Worldwide consortium for neuroscientific investigations of meditation practices.

Meditation is a family of ancient and contemporary contemplative mind-body practices that can modulate psychological processes, awareness, and mental states. Background: The severity of Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD) is rarely documented in structured data fields in electronic health records (EHRs). Although this information is important for clinical monitoring and decision-making, it is often undocumented or "hidden" in unstructured text fields and not readily available for clinicians to act upon.

In the current study, the Sonogashira coupling reaction of danazol with aryl halides was carried out, yielding new aryl substituted danazol derivatives. The synthetic compounds were examined for anti-cancer potential on the HeLa human cervical cancer cell line, and they showed promising cytotoxic action. Synthesized compounds 2, 4 and 5 inhibited the growth of HeLa cervical cancer cells, potentially making them effective anti-cancer drugs in the future.

Lung cancer varies between Caucasians and Asians. There have been differences recorded in the epidemiology, genomics, standard therapies and outcomes, with variations according to the geography and ethnicity which affect the decision for optimal treatment of the patients. To better understand the profile of lung cancer in Southeast Asia, with a focus on India, we have comprehensively reviewed the available data, and discuss the challenges and the way forward.

Therapeutic hypothermia for neonates with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy in low- and lower-middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a major cause of mortality and neurodevelopmental disability, especially in low-income countries. While therapeutic hypothermia has been shown to reduce morbidity and mortality in infants with HIE, some clinical trials in low-income countries have reported an increase in the risk of mortality. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of all randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials conducted in low-income and lower-middle-income countries that compared cooling therapy with standard care for HIE.

Background: Sepsis is a dysregulated host immune response stemming from a systemic inflammatory response to microbial invasion, encompassing bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Studies have proposed a therapeutic role of dopamine in mitigating VEGF-induced permeability, shedding light on its potential in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) management.

Cytomegaloviral Infections in Recipients of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell Therapy: An Observational Study With Focus on Oncologic Outcomes.

Background: Patients with B-cell lymphoma and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who receive chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy may experience clinically significant cytomegalovirus infection (CS-CMVi). However, risk factors for CS-CMVi are not well defined. The aims of our study were to identify risk factors for CS-CMVi and the association between CS-CMVi and nonrelapse mortality (NRM) in lymphoma and ALL patients after CAR-T therapy.

Determinants of Readmission in the Intensive Care Unit: A Prospective Observational Study.

Background The antecedents of readmission among survivors of intensive care units (ICUs) are complex and comprise an array of elements that impact the rehabilitation process after leaving the ICU. The aforementioned determinants may comprise socioeconomic factors, access to follow-up healthcare, the nature and severity of the initial illness or injury, the presence of comorbidities, the sufficiency of transitional care and rehabilitation services, and patient and family support systems. Added to this, the risk of readmission may be increased by complications that develop during the ICU stay, including but not limited to infections, organ dysfunction, and psychological distress.

Programmatic mapping and estimating the population size of female sex workers, men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs and transgender populations in Kenya.

Introduction: Effective coverage of Human Immunodeficiency Virus prevention services for Key Populations (KPs) including female sex workers (FSWs), men who have sex with men (MSM), people who inject drugs (PWID) and transgender (TG) people necessitates periodic validation of physical venues and size estimates. Kenya conducted a robust size estimation of KPs in 2012 and a repeat mapping and size estimation exercise was conducted in 2018 to update KP Size Estimates and sub-typologies within each County for calculation of realistic program indicators.
