Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR), a common condition in the westernized world, is suggested to be more immunologically complex than the archetypical 'Th2' inflammation. New approaches are needed to decode this complexity.
Aims/objectives: In this study, we explored a novel histology-based analysis for circulating blood leukocyte profiling in 16 patients with seasonal AR outside and during the pollen season.

The present study explores the capacity of pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS), a semi-synthetic heparin-like macromolecular carbohydrate, to bind Th2 cytokines and exert biological neutralization in vitro, as well as anti-inflammatory actions in vivo.
Methodology: The capacity of PPS to bind recombinant Th2 cytokines was tested with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technology and biological Th2 neutralization was assessed by Th2-dependent proliferation assays.
Background: GMZ2 is a hybrid protein consisting of the N-terminal region of the glutamate-rich protein fused in frame to the C-terminal region of merozoite surface protein 3 (MSP3). GMZ2 formulated in Al(OH)3 has been tested in 3 published phase 1 clinical trials. The GMZ2/alum formulation showed good safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity, but whether antibodies elicited by vaccination are functional is not known.

Here we report a preclinical study screening a series of adjuvant vehicles and Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists in CB6F1 mice to identify an improved formulation of GMZ2 suitable for further human clinical studies. GMZ2 formulated in an oil-in-water emulsion plus the synthetic TLR4 agonist GLA elicits the highest (a) vaccine-specific IgG2a and total IgG titers, (b) parasite-specific IFA titers, (c) levels of Type 1 cytokine responses (IFN-γ), and (d) number of long-lived-plasma cells (LLPC) secreting antibodies against both the GMZ2 fusion and its two components.

Aging is known in all organisms that have different somatic and reproductive cells or in unicellular organisms that divide asymmetrically. Bacteria that divide symmetrically were believed to be immune to natural aging. The demonstration of functionally asymmetric division and aging in Escherichia coli recently has challenged this belief and led to the suggestion that aging might be inevitable for all life forms.
