We report a case of a male, term newborn with known left congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) who presented with circulatory compromise requiring maximal inotropic support in the first 24 hours of life. Acute hypertension is caused by increased extracellular osmolarity after intake of dietary salt (NaCl). When ruptured, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of the human knee has limited regenerative potential. However, the goal of this report was to show that the cells that migrate out of the human ACL constitute a rich population of progenitor cells and we hypothesize that they display mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) characteristics when compared with adherent cells derived from bone marrow or collagenase digests from ACL. We show that ACL outgrowth cells are adherent, fibroblastic cells with a surface immunophenotype strongly positive for cluster of differentiation (CD)29, CD44, CD49c, CD73, CD90, CD97, CD105, CD146, and CD166, weakly positive for CD106 and CD14, but negative for CD11c, CD31, CD34, CD40, CD45, CD53, CD74, CD133, CD144, and CD163.

Background Aims: To date there are only very few data available on the ligamentogenic differentiation capacity of mesenchymal stromal/progenitor cells (MSC) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) fibroblasts.

Methods: We describe the in vitro potential of MSC and ACL cells to undergo ligamentogenic differentiation upon transduction with adenoviral vectors encoding the human cDNA for bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) 12 and BMP13, also known as growth and differentiation factors (GDF) 6 and 7, respectively.

Between December 2000 and May 2001, approximately 200 children presented to Sydney Children's Hospital with hand-foot-and-mouth disease and 18 experienced neurologic complications. Four presented with acute invasive central nervous system disease and severe pulmonary edema.

Studies of two post-mortem pancreata of children at the onset of type I diabetes have suggested activation and expansion of islet infiltrating T cells by a superantigen. We present the first reported case of a superantigen mediated disease, toxic shock syndrome (TSS), occurring at the diagnosis of type I diabetes. It was observed, that following an injection of 3-methylcholanthrene (MC), the tissue redox-state potential is modified expressively both in liver and in red muscles. In the liver in the first day an oxidosis develops, which is followed by redosis, but in the muscle a redosis can be observed already in the first day.
