Objective: The Oral Impact of Daily Performances (OIDP) is a dental patient-reported outcome measure (dPROM) for the estimation of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and takes the frequency as well as the severity of problems into account; however, it is not available in German language. The aim of this study was, therefore, to evaluate the reliability and validity of the German version of the OIDP in patients of a private practice.

Material And Methods: Translation of the original OIDP version was performed by a forward-backward process.

Synchronous Onset of Breast and Pancreatic Cancers: Results of Germline and Somatic Genetic Analysis.

Hi-trees and their layout.

We introduce hi-trees, a new visual representation for hierarchical data in which, depending on the kind of parent node, the child relationship is represented using either containment or links. We give a drawing convention for hi-trees based on the standard layered drawing convention for rooted trees, then show how to extend standard bottom-up tree layout algorithms to draw hi-trees in this convention. We also explore a number of other more compact layout styles for layout of larger hi-trees and give algorithms for computing these.

In patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) cachexia as well as Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR) are well known disorders. The relationship between CSR and cardiac cachexia however, remains unclear so far. Clinical as well as full-night polysomnographic data from 12 cachectic patients were compared to 13 non-cachectic patients with CHF.

The role of imaging in obstetrics and gynecology has undergone a revolution over the past few decades. Well-established methods such as endovaginal ultrasound have had a central role in the evaluation of nongravid patients with pelvic pain, as well as in the workup for ectopic pregnancy and evaluation of adnexal masses. Additional tools include MRI in the evaluation of appendicitis and other potentially surgical conditions in pregnant patients and MRI and CT in the evaluation of surgical complications.

We investigated expression and localization of OCTN2 in the human heart, uptake of drugs by OCTN2, and functional coupling of OCTN2 with the eliminating ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter ABCB1 (P-glycoprotein).

Epizootiologic investigations of parvovirus infections in free-ranging carnivores from Germany.

To assess if wild carnivores in Germany play a role in the epizootiology of canine parvovirus (CPV) infection, seroprevalences against CPV in free-ranging carnivores (n=1,496) from selected urban and rural areas were compared. Antibodies against CPV were found in sera from red foxes (Vulpes vulpes; 136 of 1,442; 9%), raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonides; two of 33; 6%), stone martens (Martes foina; four of 13; 31%), and pine martens (Martes martes; one of two) using the hemagglutination-inhibition test and pig erythrocytes. Evidence of CPV infection was detected in all study areas.

PURPOSE Evaluation of disease-related symptom improvement rate by the Lung Cancer Subscale (LCS) of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Lung (FACT-L) questionnaire was a coprimary end point of the pivotal phase II trial of gefitinib (Iressa; AstraZeneca, Wilmington, DE) conducted in the United States. This report includes the results of analyses exploring the relationship between weekly LCS scores and radiographic response and survival, as well as detailed protocol-specified analysis of symptom and quality-of-life data. The protein involved in this transfer, however, has not been identified on a molecular level. Efficacy of gefitinib, an inhibitor of the epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase, in symptomatic patients with non-small cell lung cancer: a randomized trial.

In preclinical testing, oral gefitinib inhibited the growth of NSCLC tumors that express the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a mediator of cell signaling, and phase 1 trials have demonstrated that a fraction of patients with NSCLC progressing after chemotherapy experience both a decrease in lung cancer symptoms and radiographic tumor shrinkages with gefitinib.

Unusually indolent T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia associated with a complex karyotype: is this T-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia?

T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL) is typically associated with an aggressive clinical course, with a median survival of less than 1 year. We report a case of T-PLL that displays multiple cytogenetic abnormalities, with the most complex subclone having the following karyotype: 47, Y, -X, +8, inv (10) (p12q26), del (11) (p13p15) +marker. However, despite this genetic complexity, the leukemia has behaved in a remarkably indolent manner, with the patient remaining asymptomatic, without therapeutic intervention, for more than 7 years.

Foundations can support efforts to integrate what is known from the biological, behavioral, and social sciences to solve the nation's most pressing health problems. In doing so, they will help to build the scientific capacity to conduct high-quality integrative research in anticipation of a more robust public investment in translating what is known about health into what is done to improve and maintain it.

Phase II trial of irinotecan in combination with amifostine in patients with advanced colorectal carcinoma.

Background: Irinotecan is effective in patients with advanced colorectal carcinoma in both first-line and salvage settings but its use can be limited by serious side effects. Amifostine has been shown to reduce the incidence of cisplatin-induced cumulative renal toxicity in patients with advanced ovarian carcinoma and nonsmall cell lung carcinoma. In the current pilot Phase II trial, the authors examined the potential role of amifostine as a protective agent against irinotecan-induced diarrhea and myelosuppression and evaluated an every-2-weeks regimen as an alternative schedule for the administration of irinotecan in patients with previously treated metastatic colorectal carcinoma.

Safety and efficacy of exisulind for treatment of recurrent prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy.

Purpose: We evaluated the safety and efficacy of exisulind for delaying disease progression in men with increasing prostate specific antigen (PSA) after radical prostatectomy.

Materials And Methods: A total of 96 men with increasing PSA after radical prostatectomy were randomized to receive placebo (49) or 250 mg. exisulind twice daily (47) for 12 months.

Porcine teschoviruses comprise at least eleven distinct serotypes: molecular and evolutionary aspects.

Nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of 10 recognized prototype strains of the porcine enterovirus (PEV) cytopathic effect (CPE) group I reveals a close relationship of the viral genomes to the previously sequenced strain F65, supporting the concept of a reclassification of this virus group into a new picornavirus genus. Also, nucleotide sequences of the polyprotein-encoding genome region or the P1 region of 28 historic strains and recent field isolates were determined. The data suggest that several closely related but antigenically and molecular distinct serotypes constitute one species within the proposed genus Teschovirus.

Detection of porcine enteroviruses by nRT-PCR: differentiation of CPE groups I-III with specific primer sets.

Porcine enteroviruses (PEV) comprising at least 13 serotypes grouped into three species are described as causative agents of neurological disorders, fertility disorders, and dermal lesions of swine. Despite their well-documented acid stability, enteric infection route, and similarity of clinical symptoms, most of the porcine enterovirus (PEV) serotypes are set apart from the genus Enterovirus of the Picornaviridae. Hence, PCR procedures used commonly to detect enteroviruses are not applicable to epizootic relevant PEV serotypes.

Randomized trial of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy with or without radiotherapy for carcinoma of the rectum: National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project Protocol R-02.

Background: The conviction that postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy represent an acceptable standard of care for patients with Dukes' B (stage II) and Dukes' C (stage III) carcinoma of the rectum evolved in the absence of data from clinical trials designed to determine whether the addition of radiotherapy results in improved disease-free survival and overall survival. This study was carried out to address this issue.
