Health risk behaviors continue to disproportionately affect Hispanic youth. Despite the existence of successful family and school-based interventions, there is a need for developing and testing individually-based preventive interventions that are easily accessed and widely disseminated. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a prototype (proof of concept) for an individual-level mobile application (app), informed by Hispanic parents and adolescents, to prevent/reduce drug use and sexual risk behaviors among Hispanic youth.

Background: There is an established link between depression and drug use among adolescents. This relationship holds true for Hispanic youth, for whom familial relationships are especially impactful toward health outcomes.

Purpose: Our purpose was to examine the relationships between family functioning and adolescent and parent depressive symptoms, and the indirect effects of depressive symptoms on the relationship between family functioning and adolescent drug use.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined how the physiological patterns of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with severe aortic stenosis (SAS) change before and after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).* -
  • It found that most patients had diffuse CAD, and vessels that showed a decrease in fractional flow reserve (FFR) post-TAVI had lower pre-TAVI measurements and exhibited significant gradients.* -
  • Instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR) changes were inconsistent, with both increases and decreases observed in vessels despite similar low pre-TAVI FFR and iFR values.*

Purpose: Sexual orientation is multidimensional, yet existing studies often only assess one dimension. This study examines multiple dimensions of sexual orientation in a sample of Hispanic adolescents using a latent profile analysis. The study also examines differences in levels of adolescent family functioning (i.

Background And Purpose: Resistance training exercise provides increases in muscle size and is used by coaches and health care professional as a tool to improve functional performance. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of 10 weeks of resistance training program performed on the bench press (BP) exercise on the hypertrophic responses of four different muscles (pectoralis major, anterior and medial deltoid, brachii, and pectoralis minor) involved in the task compared to controls.

Methods: Twenty-four healthy males were recruited, and thirteen performed a resistance training intervention while eleven were control.

Research Background: In a country where millions of people have nutritional needs, innovative ways of producing food from commonly wasted agro-industrial by-products, can be an important alternative for the production of fermented beverages. In light of this, the aim of this study is to evaluate the potential of fruit by-products from acerola, guava and tamarind for the production of fermented beverages.

Experimental Approach: Physicochemical and microbiological parameters, total antioxidant capacity and fermentation kinetics were investigated during the first (at 0, 48, 72, 96 and 168 h) and second fermentation (at 0 and 24 h).

Aims: Nanoemulsions based on plant essential oils have shown promise as alternatives against fungal pathogens by increasing the solubility and bioavailability of the active compounds of essential oils, which can improve their efficacy and safety. In the present study, we aimed to prepare and characterize nanoemulsions of Lippia origanoides essential oil, and analyze their antifungal activity against C. albicans in planktonic and biofilm form.

Genomic selection is revolutionizing both plant and animal breeding, with its practical application depending critically on high prediction accuracy. In this study, we aimed to enhance prediction accuracy by exploring the use of graph models within a linear mixed model framework. Our investigation revealed that incorporating the graph constructed with line connections alone resulted in decreased prediction accuracy compared to conventional methods that consider only genotype effects.

Families are key in the healthy development of Latinx sexual minority youth (Latinx SMY), a group that experiences behavioral, mental, and sexual health disparities. Despite this, there are no family-based interventions for Latinx SMY and their families to prevent drug use, sexual risk behaviors, and depressive symptoms. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the preliminary impact (i.

Despite significant goals achieved in diagnosis and treatment in recent decades, coronary artery disease (CAD) remains a high mortality entity and continues to pose substantial challenges to healthcare systems globally. After the latest guidelines, novel data have emerged and have not been yet considered for routine practice. The scope of this review is to go beyond the guidelines, providing insights into the most recent clinical updates in CAD, focusing on non-invasive diagnostic techniques, risk stratification, medical management and interventional therapies in the acute and stable scenarios.

Study Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented levels of stress and anxiety, which has a profound effect on sleep quality. However, limited data are available on the sleep quality of medical residents who work directly with patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. As sleep is a crucial brain state, our goal is to know the sleep quality of these medical residents.

Background: Physiological patterns of coronary artery disease (CAD) have emerged as potential determinants of functional results of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) and of vessel-oriented clinical outcomes (VOCE).

Objectives: In this study, we evaluated the impact of angiography-derived physiological patterns of CAD on post-PCI functional results and long-term clinical outcomes.

Methods: Pre-PCI angiography-derived fractional flow reserve (FFR) virtual pullbacks were quantitatively interpreted and used to determine the physiological patterns of CAD.

Background: Robust data on the learning curve (LC) of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) are lacking in developing countries.

Objective: To assess TAVR's LC in Brazil over time.

Methods: We analyzed data from the Brazilian TAVR registry from 2008 to 2023.

Background: This study examined the implementation determinants of a culturally grounded, school-based drug prevention curriculum in rural Hawai'i. Test development and validation procedures were used to examine the impact of implementation barriers and facilitators of the curriculum in public or charter middle/intermediate schools on Hawai'i Island.

Method: A five-phase, mixed-methods approach toward test development and validation was used.

Article Synopsis
  • - Horses transformed human mobility, but the timeline of their domestication and integration as transport is debated, with new genetic data being used to clarify this history.
  • - Analysis of 475 ancient horse genomes indicates that modern domestic horses were shaped by human intervention around 2200 BCE, after a domestication bottleneck began around 2700 BCE, leading to a significant expansion across Eurasia.
  • - Evidence also suggests that there was early horse husbandry in central Asia at Botai around 3500 BCE, prior to the establishment of contemporary horse bloodlines, challenging the notion of large herds being linked to migrations around 3000 BCE.

Coronary physiological assessment has garnered extensive application in managing patients with coronary artery disease, encompassing both acute and chronic scenarios. Beyond the historical purpose as tool to define the hemodynamic significance of a given artery lesion, coronary artery physiology allows for a complete investigation of epicardial and microvascular circulation. The longitudinal assessment of the distribution pattern of coronary disease based on pressure wire technology provides crucial information to define the best management and procedural planning.

Although lung cancer (LC) is one of the most common and lethal tumors, only 15% of patients are diagnosed at an early stage. Smoking is still responsible for more than 85% of cases. Lung cancer screening (LCS) with low-dose CT (LDCT) reduces LC-related mortality by 20%, and that reduction reaches 38% when LCS by LDCT is combined with smoking cessation.

People who use languages other than English (LOE) are rarely included in research in the United States. LOE communities face numerous health disparities that are rooted in language injustice and other intersecting oppressions including racism and xenophobia. Equitable inclusion of LOE communities in research is an important step to disrupt health disparities.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored how parents' childhood family mealtime experiences and their socio-demographic factors influence their health-related parenting strategies, particularly in the context of discipline and mealtime control.
  • - It was found that these parenting strategies significantly predict youth's health outcomes, such as dietary intake and physical quality of life, but there was no mediating effect identified between the childhood experiences and youth outcomes.
  • - The results highlight that parents' experiences during their own childhood can impact their parenting strategies, which are linked to their children’s health-related behaviors and outcomes.
