T helper 17 (Th17) cells are effector cells that mediate inflammatory responses to bacterial and fungal pathogens. While the cytokine signaling inputs required to generate Th17s are established, less is known about intracellular pathways that drive Th17 differentiation. Our previously published phosphoproteomic screen identifies that PIKFYVE, a lipid kinase that generates the phosphatidylinositol PtdIns(3,5)P2, is activated during Th17 differentiation.

: (I) to verify if there are sex differences in respiratory function, respiratory muscle strength, and effort limitation in individuals recovered from severe acute COVID-19 30 months after the initial infection, and (II) to evaluate the influence of length of stay on cardiorespiratory capacity among men and women. : Cross-sectional observational multicentric study with participants from five Brazilian states (São Paulo, Amazonas, Minas Gerais, Bahia, and Brasília). We assessed lung function and respiratory muscle strength by maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), maximum expiratory pressure (MEP), and cardiorespiratory fitness by cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET).

Article Synopsis
  • * Anti-inflammatory drugs like PPARγ agonists, particularly pioglitazone, may help prevent schizophrenia by reducing inflammation triggered by maternal poly(I:C) injections and stress in offspring.
  • * Pioglitazone was shown to decrease inflammation in microglia without harming their ability to engulf pathogens and prevented social and cognitive deficits in animals exposed to maternal and stress factors.

Selenium (Se) is a nutrient whose daily intake is often below the recommended levels in people. Biofortification with Se is a method to increase this intake by raising the Se concentration in tomato fruits, an effect dependent on sources and modes of application. Additionally, Se application can promote the enhancement of other compounds in tomato fruits, altering their metabolism, which may increase the fruit's shelf life.

  • A study looked at how well a medicine called trabectedin, combined with another medicine called PLD, works for older patients with ovarian cancer that came back after treatment.
  • The study involved 43 patients who were at least 70 years old, and it found that some responded well to the treatment, with 9.3% having a complete response and 32.6% showing partial improvement.
  • The results suggest that this treatment is both effective and safe for older patients, which is important for helping them feel better during their care.

Background: The number of people who run to achieve competitive performance has increased, encouraging the scientific community to analyze the association of factors that can affect a runner performance.

Research Question: Is there association between running spatiotemporal and angular kinematics with the physiological markers of endurance performance during a cardiorespiratory exercise test?

Methods: This was an observational cross-sectional study with 40 distance runners simultaneously submitted to a running biomechanical analysis and cardiorespiratory exercise test on a treadmill. Mixed models were developed to verify the association between angular kinematic data obtained by the Movement Deviation Profile and the running spatiotemporal data with oxygen consumption and ventilatory thresholds.

Article Synopsis
  • XIAP deficiency is a rare genetic immune disorder linked to mutations in the XIAP gene, often diagnosed through flow cytometry to detect the absence of XIAP protein.
  • To enhance diagnostics, researchers explored how specifically stimulating leukocytes with L18-muramyl Di-Peptide (a NOD2 agonist) impacts the down-regulation of the L-selectin molecule, providing insights into XIAP functionality.
  • The study found that neutrophils and monocytes from XIAP-deficient patients exhibited significantly reduced CD62-L response to L18-MDP compared to healthy controls, indicating a dysfunction in the NOD2-XIAP signaling pathway, while the response to lipopolysaccharide was normal.

  • Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common condition that can be treated effectively with exercise, but traditional programs are not widely used, leading to interest in home-based options.
  • This study aims to compare the effects of a home-based exercise program (HBEP) versus a center-based exercise program (CBE) on functional capacity, muscle oxygenation, and quality of life in PAD patients over a 12-week period.
  • The research involves a randomized clinical trial, with outcomes measured through various tests and interviews to assess participant experiences and satisfaction, while ethical approval has been secured for the study.

Potato () is considered one of the most widely consumed crops worldwide, due to its high yield and nutritional profile, climate change-related environmental threats and increasing food demand. This scenario highlights the need of sustainable agricultural practices to enhance potato productivity, while preserving and maintaining soil health. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) stimulate crop production through biofertilization mechanisms with low environmental impact.

The hydration properties of the fluoride-based deep eutectic solvent ethalineF [a solution of choline fluoride in ethylene glycol (EG) at a 1:2 molar ratio] are studied and compared to the most common deep eutectic solvent ethaline (the solution of choline chloride in EG at 1:2 molar ratio). The densities of the deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on choline fluoride in EG (ethalineF) and its mixtures with water as cosolvent are measured over the temperature range of 298-323 K. The excess properties, including excess molar volumes, excess partial molar volumes, and viscosity deviations from ideal behavior, are calculated for ethalineF/water and ethaline/water mixtures and compared.

Postacute sequelae of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection (PASC) often leads to exertional intolerance and reduced exercise capacity, particularly in individuals previously admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). However, the impact of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) on PASC-associated cardiorespiratory abnormalities during exercise remains poorly understood. This single-center, cross-sectional study aimed to gather knowledge on this topic.

Background: Aldosterone has been described to initiate cardiovascular diseases by triggering exacerbated sterile vascular inflammation. The functions of CCL5 (C-C motif chemokine ligand 5) and its receptor CCR5 (C-C motif chemokine receptor 5) are well known in infectious diseases, their contributions to aldosterone-induced vascular injury and hypertension remain unknown.

Methods: We analyzed the vascular profile, blood pressure, and renal damage in wild-type (CCR5) and CCR5 knockout (CCR5) mice treated with aldosterone (600 µg/kg per day for 14 days) while receiving 1% saline to drink.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most incident types of cancer among women in the world. Although chemotherapy is an effective way to treat several types of cancer, it may also cause serious complications, including cardiotoxicity. This study aimed to identify the impact of chemotherapy on functional capacity, muscle strength and autonomic function.

Article Synopsis
  • After surviving sepsis, adults often have weakened immune systems and more chances of getting sick again, but it's unclear how this happens in kids.
  • The study looked at different aged mice (2-week-old vs 6-week-old) to see how their immune systems responded after sepsis and found that younger mice were better at fighting off infections.
  • The research suggests that older mice had higher levels of a substance called IL-33, which affects immune cells, while younger mice's immune systems reacted differently, showing that age impacts how sepsis affects patients.

This study aimed to compare cardiopulmonary fitness and endothelial function 6 months after hospital diagnosis in a sample mainly comprising immunocompromised patients with confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection versus noninfected controls. Youth ( = 30; age: 14 yr; 60% females) with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 seen in a tertiary hospital of Sao Paulo, Brazil, were matched by propensity score based on BMI, age, sex, and pre-existing diseases with a control group who had not been tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection ( = 30; age: 15 yr; 50% females). Cardiopulmonary fitness (by means of a cardiopulmonary exercise test: CPET) and brachial flow-mediated dilation (%b-FMD) were assessed 3-6 mo after diagnosis.
