Craniometaphyseal dysplasia is a rare congenital sclerosing skeletal dysplasia that presents with facial dimorphism and is clinically described by prominent supraorbital bridges, severe retrognathia, and respiratory problems. The pentavalent meglumine antimoniate (MA) is still a first-line drug in the treatment of leishmaniasis in several countries. As an attempt to elucidate its mechanism of action and develop new antimonial drugs with improved therapeutic profile, Sb(V) complexes with different ligands, including β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), nucleosides and non-ionic surfactants, have been studied. Interestingly, Sb(V) oxide, MA, its complex with β-CD, Sb(V)-guanosine complex and amphiphilic Sb(V) complexes with N-alkyl-N-methylglucamide, have shown marked tendency to self-assemble in aqueous solutions, forming nanoaggregates, hydrogel or micelle-like nanoparticles.

COVID-19 induces chromatin remodeling in host immune cells, and it had previously been shown that vitamin B12 downregulates some inflammatory genes methyl-dependent epigenetic mechanisms. In this work, whole blood cultures from moderate or severe COVID-19 patients were used to assess the potential of B12 as adjuvant drug. The vitamin normalized the expression of a panel of inflammatory genes still dysregulated in the leukocytes despite glucocorticoid therapy during hospitalization.

Untreated samples were injected directly into a column switching system, an online SPE technique, using an extraction column packed with restricted access hybrid carbon nanotubes (RAHCNTs), a novel type of restricted access material, in an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography, coupled to a mass spectrometer (UHPLC-MS/MS). The synthesis of used restricted access material was relatively simple, quick, and reproducible, and had a high material yield.
