Fluorescein-mediated sonodynamic therapy (FL-SDT) is an extremely promising approach for glioma treatment, resulting from the combination of low-intensity focused ultrasound (FUS) with a sonosensitizer. In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy and immunomodulation of SDT with fluorescein as the sonosensitizer in immunocompetent GL261 glioma mice for the first time. In vitro studies demonstrated that the exposure of GL261 cells to FL-SDT induced immunogenic cell death and relevant upregulation of MHC class I, CD80 and CD86 expression.

Among the main phenomena that are causing significant changes in ocean waters are warming and acidification, largely due to anthropogenic activities. Ultrasound-triggered microbubbles destruction leading to vascular shutdown have resulted in preclinical studies in tumor growth delay or inhibition, lesion formation, radio-sensitization and modulation of the immune micro-environment. Antivascular ultrasound aims to be developed as a focal, targeted, non-invasive, mechanical and non-thermal treatment, alone or in combination with other treatments, and this review positions these treatments among the wider therapeutic ultrasound domain. Antivascular effects have been reported for a wide range of ultrasound exposure conditions, and evidence points to a prominent role of cavitation as the main mechanism.

Objective: The aim of the work described here was to determine the possible impact of the new technique advanced hemodynamic ultrasound evaluation (AHUSE) in identification of severe intracranial stenosis. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) and transcranial color-coded Doppler (TCCD) provide reliable velocimetric data, the indirect analysis of which allows us to obtain information on the patency of vessels and assumed stenosis range. However, very tight stenoses (>95%) cannot be detected with velocimetric criteria because of spectrum drops and the absence of high velocities, so that the right curve of the Spencer equation cannot be solved.

Stable isotopes in mollusc shells, together with variable growth rates and other geochemical properties, can register different environmental clues, including seawater temperature, salinity and primary productivity. However, the strict biological control over the construction of biominerals exerted by many calcifying organisms can constrain the use of these organisms for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Using the Mediterranean coral Balanophyllia europaea naturally growing along a pH gradient close to Panarea island (Italy) as a model, we explored the role of host-associated microbiomes in coral acclimatization to ocean acidification (OA). Coral samples were collected at three sites along the gradient, mimicking seawater conditions projected for 2100 under different IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) scenarios, and mucus, soft tissue and skeleton associated microbiomes were characterized by shotgun metagenomics. Most of the available studies on low pH effects on coral reproduction have been conducted on tropical species under controlled conditions, while little information is reported for either tropical or temperate species in the field. Otolith biomineralization results from biochemical processes regulated by the interaction of internal (physiological) and external (environmental) factors which lead to morphological and ultrastructural variability at intra- and interspecific levels. The aim of this study was to conduct a multi-scale analysis of the sagittal otoliths of the (European hake) from the western Adriatic Sea in order to correlate otolith features with fish ontogeny and sex. We show that otoliths of sexually undifferentiated (non-sexed) individuals having a fish body total length (TL) less than 15 cm had faster growth in length, width, area, perimeter, volume and weight and a higher amount of organic matrix compared with otoliths of sexually differentiated individuals (females and males) having a fish size range of 15-50 cm.
