Periorbital necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a devastating bacterial infection associated with irreversible inflammatory destruction of soft tissues. Outcomes include disfigurement, vision loss, septic shock, and death within hours to days. We describe two cases of periorbital NF that presented to our unit within a three-month period.

Recently, comorbid sleep deficits have been highlighted in these disorders, with sleep repair a potential therapeutic target. Animal models of FASD have shown non-REM (NREM) sleep fragmentation and slow-wave oscillation impairments that predict cognitive performance.

Health Disparities for Immigrant Children: Focus on Epilepsy.

Although health and health care disparities between immigrant and native-born adult populations in the United States are well documented, the pediatric literature is limited. Data suggest first- and second- generation immigrant children have worse health outcomes when compared with their native-born counterparts because of factors such as socioeconomic status, insurance and language barriers, authorization status, and bias/xenophobia. This article takes a broad look at existing research regarding health barriers for immigrant children, then focuses on the pediatric epilepsy literature to highlight the complex interplay of these disparity factors.

Methods: Sample included 1200 late preterm infants (LPIs) from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort. Objective measurements of development at 9 and 24 months (Bayley-SFR) and reading and math academic achievement at preschool and kindergarten were standardized; trajectories of late preterm development from 9 months to kindergarten reading and math were identified using latent class growth analysis.

Emotion Regulation in Toddlerhood: Regulatory Strategies in Anger and Fear Eliciting Contexts at 24 and 30 Months.

The study investigated the emergence of toddlers' regulatory strategies in aversive contexts. Forty-two toddlers were observed at 24 and 30 months of age using two paradigms designed to elicit fear and anger. We examined toddlers' use of regulatory strategies at these two stages of life regarding the frequency of self-versus other-oriented strategies and of reactive versus more controlled behaviors.

Ecological contexts associated with early childhood curiosity: Neighborhood safety, home and parenting quality, and socioeconomic status.

Introduction: Curiosity is an important social-emotional process underlying early learning. Our previous work found a positive association between higher curiosity and higher academic achievement at kindergarten, with a greater magnitude of benefit for children with socioeconomic disadvantage. Because characteristics of the early caregiving and physical environment impact the processes that underlie early learning, we sought to examine early environmental experiences associated with early childhood curiosity, in hopes of identifying modifiable contexts that may promote its expression.

There is limited research regarding the continuity, stability, and role of country of origin in preterm infant temperament across the first year of life. This prospective longitudinal study examined patterns of mean-level continuity and individual-differences stability of select scales of temperament at 6 and 12 months in preterm infants from three countries, Chile (n = 47), United Kingdom (n = 44), and United States (n = 50).
