AMPylation is a biologically significant yet understudied post-translational modification where an adenosine monophosphate (AMP) group is added to Tyrosine and Threonine residues primarily. While recent work has illuminated the prevalence and functional impacts of AMPylation, experimental identification of AMPylation sites remains challenging. Computational prediction techniques provide a faster alternative approach.

Effects of exercise-based prehabilitation in children undergoing elective surgeries: a systematic review.

Prehabilitation is a therapeutic strategy involving preoperative physical exercises, nutritional support, and stress and anxiety reduction. This approach has been gaining popularity and has been seeing effective results in adults in terms of improving pre and postoperative outcomes. The purpose of this review was to summarise the evidence about the effects of exercise-based prehabilitation programs on various outcome measures in children post elective surgeries.

Audit of toxic effects of body paint in the tiger dancers (Hulivesha) of Mangalore, India: an investigational study.

Introduction: Tiger dancing or Hulivesha, where the volunteers paint their bare body like a tiger and dance in a ritual during the Navarathri festival in Mangalore, India. There are no scientific studies done with the Hulivesha dancers at all, and therefore, we investigated the adverse effects of painting body like a tiger and dancing in the volunteers.

Objective/aim: In this study, we investigated the clinico-haematological effects of topical application of lead-containing paint and dancing for three consecutive days in these dancers to ascertain the toxic effects of whole body painting and dancing.

We present a case of a patient with significant structural heart disease from previous cardiac surgeries who presented for an electrophysiology study and radiofrequency ablation. The case highlights the significance of intra-atrial conduction delays in such patients and potential pitfalls it can present while interpreting intra-cardiac electrograms especially during implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) interrogations.

Right Heart Transvalvular Embolus with High Risk Pulmonary Embolism in a Recently Hospitalized Patient: A Case Report of a Therapeutic Challenge.

Thrombus-in-transit is not uncommon in pulmonary embolism but Right Heart Transvalvular Embolus (RHTVE) complicating this is rare. A 54-year-old obese male with recent hospitalization presented with severe dyspnea and collapse. Initial investigations revealed elevated d-dimer and troponin.

Interaction of media, sexual activity and academic achievement in adolescents.

Background: Adolescence is a period when the individual is vulnerable and exposure to sexually implicit/explicit programs on television and internet can influence their sexual behaviour and make them more permissive towards premarital sex, which is known to influence their academic performance. This can be modified by parental discussion on these matters with their children. There have been only few studies from India that have explored such issues therefore this study aimed to explore the impact of television, internet and parental discussion on sexual activity and academic performance.

Mind and consciousness in yoga - Vedanta: A comparative analysis with western psychological concepts.

Study of mind and consciousness through established scientific methods is often difficult due to the observed-observer dichotomy. Cartesian approach of dualism considering the mind and matter as two diverse and unconnected entities has been questioned by oriental schools of Yoga and Vedanta as well as the recent quantum theories of modern physics. Freudian and Neo-freudian schools based on the Cartesian model have been criticized by the humanistic schools which come much closer to the vedantic approach of unitariness.

Short-term minoxidil use associated with pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade: an uncommon presentation.

A 48-year-old man presented with complaints of shortness of breath and lower extremity swelling. His medical history was significant for hypertension on minoxidil and recent intracerebellar hemorrhage. Electrocardiography showed sinus tachycardia with left ventricular hypertrophy, and cardiomegaly was noted in the chest x-ray.

Military psychiatry in India.

Military personnel, because of the unique nature of their duties and services, are likely to be under stress which at times has no parallel in civilian life. The stress of combat and service in extreme weather conditions often act as major stressors. The modern practices in military psychiatry had their beginning during the two World Wars, more particularly, the II(nd) World War.

The potential of free cells of Pseudomonas aeruginosa on textile dye degradation.

The objective of the present work was to reduce chemical oxygen demand (COD), color of textile effluent containing dye Procion Blue 2G and recycle the treated effluent. To achieve this objective, the degradation potential of bacterial strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa was tested. In degradation, the 'clean' electro-oxidation (EO) process was combined with bio-treatment such that an electro-oxidation step was included between two bio-degradation treatments.

Inhibition of selenium dependent glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase in rats by diethyldithiocarbamate: effect of pre-administration of alpha-tocopherol.

Rats pre-administered with alpha-tocopherol (10 mgs/day) for 7 days afforded a significant protection at the tissue level against the lowering of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, especially the selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase. The protective action of alpha-tocopherol in the diethyldithiocarbamate treated rats may be attributed to its antioxidant/free radical scavenging action. It is concluded that selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase and alpha-tocopherol act in a complementary fashion to block free radical formation.

Therapeutic and prophylactic utility of the memory-enhancing drug donepezil hydrochloride on cognition of patients undergoing electroconvulsive therapy: a randomized controlled trial.

Objectives: Substantial progress has been made in identifying how the treatment parameters used in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) impact its cognitive side effects. However, there is limited information regarding the role of memory enhancers in post-ECT cognitive disturbances. We evaluated the therapeutic and prophylactic efficacy of the memory-enhancing drug donepezil hydrochloride on cognition of patients undergoing ECT.

Wegener's granulomatosis mimicking a parotid abscess.

We present the case of a previously healthy 59-year-old man who was under treatment for scleritis and episcleritis when he developed a parotid-gland swelling and pus-producing sinus. On surgical exploration, the features were those of a parotid abscess, but the lesion not only failed to heal post-operatively but increased in size very significantly. There was also severe necrotizing keratitis of the eyes.

Brown-Vialetto-Van Laere syndrome: a rare syndrome in otology.

Brown-Vialetto-Van Laere syndrome, or pontobulbar palsy with deafness, is a rare disorder characterized by bilateral sensorineural deafness and a variety of cranial nerve disorders usually involving the motor components of the lower cranial nerves. Less commonly, spinal motor nerves and upper motor neurons are involved. Familial and sporadic cases have been reported.

Delirium Tremens.

The varied clinical manifestations and management of 14 male patients with delirium tremens (DT) have been studied. Eight patients were initially hospitalised for diseases unrelated to ethanol abuse i.e.

In vivo inhibition of selenium dependent glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase in rats by diethyldithiocarbamate.

Intraperitoneal injection of rats with diethyldithiocarbamate (1.2 g/kg body wt) led to maximum diminution of superoxide dismutase activity at 1 hr by 86 and 84% in liver and red blood cell respectively with a gradual return to the normal level at 48 hr after administration of injection. Significant inhibition of selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase was also observed, which returned to normal at 48 hr after administration of injection.

Mesothelial cyst at porta hepatis.

Mesothelial cysts are fluid-filled sacs lined by mesothelial cells. They are rare lesions that have been known to occur at various sites, but have not been reported at the porta hepatis. We report a 45-year-old woman with mesothelial cyst at the porta hepatis that was detected incidentally during open cholecystectomy.

Lipid peroxidation in culinary oils subjected to thermal stress.

The levels of cytotoxic aldehydic products in different culinary oils, with or without thermal stress, (routine domestic or commercial frying) were determined by thiobarbituric acid method. The results showed that (i) thiobarbituric acid reactivity was much higher in edible oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids than those rich in saturated fatty acids or monounsaturated fatty acids, even without thermal stress, (ii) the lipid peroxide levels were in proportion to the duration of thermal stress, (iii) nature of the container used (steel, iron or teflon-coated) had no significant effect on the extent of lipid peroxidation under identical conditions of thermal stress and (iv) thermally stressed oils collected from hotels and roadside caterers contained higher levels of cytotoxic aldehydic products, when compared to oils thermally stressed under domestic frying conditions. These results suggest that dietary ingestion of thermally or autoxidatively stressed polyunsaturated fatty acid rich culinary oils is more harmful compared with those similarly treated oils rich in saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids.

PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION OF HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS SEROPOSITIVES IN ARMED FORCES.

Fifty five Armed Forces personnel detected to be seropositives for human immunodeficiency virus were the subjects of the study. After baseline clinical evaluation, laboratory investigations and Centre for Disease Control classification, through a semistructured interview, their sexual orientation, behaviour and psychiatric morbidity were assessed. Sixtynine percent had another sexually transmitted disease as comorbidity.
