Background: Telomere dysfunction results in aneuploidy, and ongoing chromosomal abnormalities. The three-dimensional (3D) nuclear organization of telomeres allows for a distinction between normal and tumor cells. On the other hand, aurora kinase genes (AURKA and AURKB) play an important role regulating the cell cycle.

Effects of Trauma and Anxiety on Adherence in Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes.

Background: Psychiatric factors such as depression, anxiety, and life stressors have been shown to negatively affect diabetes self-management and A1C in children and adolescents. However, less is known about how trauma exposure and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may affect type 1 diabetes.

Objectives: To determine the rates of trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms in patients aged 7-21 years with type 1 diabetes and to examine the relationships among trauma exposure, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and diabetes self-management.

Cancer in nonagenarian patients presents an ethical dilemma for surgeons and oncologists, and management of this group of patients in emergency for complicated CRC is debated. Presently described is retrospective study reporting experience of 6 departments of emergency surgery with management of nonagenarian patients sent to emergency surgery for CRC complications.

Growth and growth hormone treatment in children with chronic diseases.

Growth hormone has been available for treatment of various conditions for over 50 years. There have been a number of chronic disease states in which it has been used, such as chronic kidney disease, which became a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved indication in 1993. For other chronic disease states there have been clinical studies supporting its use, but they have not yet been approved as a indications by the FDA.

Three-dimensional morphology of heel fat pad: an in vivo computed tomography study.

Heel fat pad cushioning efficiency is the result of its structure, shape and thickness. However, while a number of studies have investigated heel fat pad (HFP) anatomy, structural behavior and material properties, no previous study has described its three-dimensional morphology in situ. The assessment of the healthy, unloaded, three-dimensional morphology of heel pad may contribute to deepen the understanding of its role and behavior during locomotion.

High throughput transmission optical projection tomography using low cost graphics processing unit.

We implement the use of a graphics processing unit (GPU) in order to achieve real time data processing for high-throughput transmission optical projection tomography imaging. By implementing the GPU we have obtained a 300 fold performance enhancement in comparison to a CPU workstation implementation. This enables to obtain on-the-fly reconstructions enabling for high throughput imaging.

Electrochemical treatment of phenolic waters in presence of chloride with boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes: experimental study and mathematical model.

This work deals with an experimental and numerical study on the electrochemical treatment of waters containing phenolic compounds with boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes. Anodic oxidation of m-cresol, as a model of phenolic compound, was investigated by galvanostatic electrolyses. The electrolyses were carried out under different experimental conditions by using an impinging-jet flow cell inserted in a hydraulic circuit in a closed loop.

Prospective evaluation of ultrasonography plus MIBI scintigraphy in selecting patients with primary hyperparathyroidism for unilateral neck exploration under local anaesthesia.

Background: Unilateral neck exploration (UNE) is currently replacing conventional bilateral neck exploration with cervicotomy for the surgical treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). However, many concerns still exist about the indications and the effectiveness of this minimally invasive approach.

Methods: Prospective evaluation of operative results in consecutive patients having indications for UNE on the basis of strict selection criteria consisting of ultrasound-MIBI agreement in adenoma localization, absence of thyroid disease, and psychological suitability for undergoing a procedure under local anesthesia.

A primary pancreatic carcinoid tumour with unusual clinical complaints: A case report.

Background: Unless metastatic or compressing the pancreatic duct, carcinoid of the pancreas are asymptomatic showing normal levels of serotonine and its metabolites in plasma and urine, thus resulting in delayed diagnosis and a consequent poor prognosis. However, if resection is timely accomplished, no local recurrence might be encountered and a normal survival might be expected in the absence of metastatic disease.

Fenton-type treatment: state of the art.

The different currently used Fenton-type treatments, either chemically or electrochemically generated, are reviewed. A particular attention is devoted to the traditional Fe++/H2O2 chemical process and to the indirect electrochemical oxidation which uses in situ generated hydrogen peroxide. Mechanisms and experimental conditions employed for the optimisation of each technology are reported; moreover advantages and main limitations are discussed.

[Gastric interdigitating reticulum cell sarcoma: unusual presentation of a histiocytic tumor].

Histiocytic sarcoma, proliferation arising from immunoregulatory effector system cells, is a very rare and recently recognized tumor. Diagnosis is based on immunohistochemical and molecular genetic study, which allows to distinguish histiocytic sarcoma from lymphocytic proliferation, such as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. We report the case of a gastric interdigitating reticulum cell sarcoma, treated by resection and chemotherapy.

[The recurrence of hepatitic C in orthotopic liver transplantation].

Background: This study is a review of hepatitis C recurrence in patients undergoing an orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT); to verify how many patients HCV-positive before OLT confirm a persistent viremia after OLT and how many with viremia show hepatitis histological evidence.

Methods: Thirty consecutive patients, 24 males, median age 52.5 underwent OLT for posthepatitic C cirrhosis since January 1993 in the "Transplantation Center" of Genoa.

Percutaneous absorption of parabens from cosmetic formulations.

Synopsis Absorption through human skin of a series of six p-hydroxy-benzoates (parabens) was studied in vitro. A diffusion chamber was used, where the receiving phase was a physiological solution of albumin. Maximum fluxes and permeability constants of the parabens were measured from different vehicles representing hydrophilic and lipophilic phases, and from different types of common commercial cosmetic emulsions, each containing a known quantity of a single member of the series.
