Disseminated classic Kaposi's sarcoma. Two cases with excellent response to pegylated liposomal doxorubicin.

Pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) is usually used in disseminated HIV-related Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). It is the first-line treatment or second-line therapy in patients who do not tolerate or do not respond to polychemotherapy since 1995, when it was approved by the FDA. We report two cases of disseminated classic KS not associated with immunosuppression in which HHV-8 infection was demonstrated.

Cell division is a highly regulated process that has to be coordinated with cell specification and differentiation for proper development and growth of the plants. Cell cycle regulation is carried out by key proteins that control cell cycle entry, progression and exit. This regulation is controlled at different stages such as gene expression, posttranslational modification of proteins and specific proteolysis.

Anetodermic mastocytosis: response to PUVA therapy.

Mastocytosis is a group of disorders characterized by the accumulation of mast cells in different tissues and organs. The skin is the most frequently involved organ (90% of cases) where mastocytosis may show a heterogenic clinical expression. Anetodermic lesions are an unusual clinical presentation of mastocytosis.

Epidermal nevi treated by carbon dioxide laser vaporization: a series of 25 patients.

Background: Epidermal nevi are benign proliferations of epidermis. Numerous treatment modalities have been tried, but no ideal treatment is yet available.

Objective: To report our experience with CO(2) laser vaporization in the treatment of verrucous epidermal nevi, and to identify which factors could have influence in long-term results.

Biofilm formation is a crucial step in the pathogenesis of many subacute and chronic bacterial infections, including foreign body-related infections. Biofilms are difficult to eradicate with conventional antimicrobial agents. Bacterial biofilms have several potential antimicrobial resistance mechanisms.

A pharmacoepidemiological study of the consumption of antiparkinson drugs in the Basque Autonomous Community (Spain) (1992-2004).

Purpose: To monitor the rise in consumption of antiparkinson drugs as well as the prevalence of this illness in the Basque Autonomous Community (Spain) over a period of 13 years (1992-2004).

Methods: A retrospective population-based study where consumption of antiparkinson drugs was conducted using data obtained from the ECOM (Especialidades Consumo de Medicamentos) database of the Spanish Ministry of Health, which contains the number of prescriptions filled in community pharmacies and charged to the National Health System. The results are expressed as DID, Defined daily doses per 1000 inhabitants per day.

Delayed intracerebral hemorrhage after ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion. Case report and literature review.

We present another case of delayed intracerebral hemorrhage after a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting procedure. In this case, a right occipital intraparenchymal hematoma and associated intraventricular hemorrhage occurred six days after the operation for hydrocephalus secondary to subarachnoid hemorrhage in a 64 year old woman. It is a rare complication of VP shunting, with few cases reported previously in the literature.

[Fatal Sweet syndrome associated to chronic idiopathic systemic inflammatory response syndrome].

Sweet syndrome is one of the cutaneous processes more frequently associated to systemic diseases. Its association to the systemic inflammatory response syndrome has rarely been described. We report a case of chronic and relapsing Sweet syndrome associated to a chronic and idiopathic systemic inflammatory response syndrome that lasted seven years and proved fatal to the patient.

Neutrophilic dermatosis of the hands: presentation of eight cases and review of the literature.

Pustular dermatosis of the dorsal hands is a peculiar variant of Sweet's syndrome described by Strutton et al. Nevertheless, not all authors accept this entity. We present a retrospective study of eight cases of neutrophilic vasculitis of the hands.

Livedoid skin reaction probably due to imatinib therapy.

Objective: To report 3 cases of skin rash with a peculiar livedoid pattern that were probably associated with imatinib therapy.

Case Summary: In the first case, a 74-year-old male diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), treated with imatinib 400 mg/day, developed a skin eruption with a livedoid pattern. Systemic corticosteroids were started, and skin lesions improved.

Treatment of refractory cholestatic pruritus with molecular adsorbent recirculating system (MARS).

Unlabelled: Pruritus is a common complication of cholestatic liver diseases or liver graft dysfunction. Current medical therapies lack efficacy. The molecular adsorbent recirculating system (MARS) represents an interesting therapeutic option.

Background: Learning conceptions may be studied as specific implicit theories based on theory of mind. Previous studies suggest that a developmental shift from a direct implicit theory of learning to an interpretative one occurs during childhood. Here we explore the development of children's autobiographies of learning to write by adopting this framework.

Organ transplantation has become one of the most important areas of medical research and, at present, is still the only therapeutical tool for several diseases. However, there are a number of factors related to transplantation, like immunosuppression and prolonged neutropenia that affect the incidence of infection. These infections are somehow peculiar to transplant recipients.

Acetabular cement mantles and component position: are we achieving "ideal" results?

Radiographs of 100 primary cemented total hip arthroplasties were studied. Acetabular component positioning and cement mantles were assessed with respect to implant type, grade of surgeon, and operated side. Seventy-eight percent of the components were eccentrically placed, with increasing cement mantle thickness from zone 1 to zone 3.

Several non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been associated with liver damage. The aim of this study was to compare proportions of hepatic adverse drug reaction reports associated with NSAIDs in France and Spain. Information from the Spanish and French pharmacovigilance databases were used from 1982 to 2001.

Model based on a quantum algorithm to study the evolution of an epidemics.

A model based on a quantum algorithm is used to study the spread of HIV virus and to predict infection rates on individuals who are not aware of their particular condition. The model makes an analogy between quantum systems and individuals who are infected by the disease. Individuals are represented by two-level quantum systems (quantum "bit"), and the interactions among individuals who cause the infection are represented by unitary transformations.
