Radiation absorbed dose to bladder walls from positron emitters in the bladder content.

A method to calculate absorbed doses at depths in the walls of a static spherical bladder from a positron emitter in the bladder content has been developed. The beta ray dose component is calculated for a spherical model by employing the solutions to the integration of Loevinger and Bochkarev point source functions over line segments and a line segment source array technique. The gamma ray dose is determined using the specific gamma ray constant.

Nucleotide sequence of the virG locus of the Agrobacterium tumefaciens plasmid pTiC58.

The nucleotide sequence of the virG locus of the nopaline type plasmid pTiC58 of Agrobacterium tumefaciens has been determined. It contains an open reading frame (ORF) of 759 nucleotides and has 77% homology to the virG sequences of octopine type plasmids. Differences between the sequences of the two types of Ti plasmids in the region of virG are located predominantly outside the ORF.

Carbohydrate malabsorption is minimal in school-age cystic fibrosis children.

Fifteen school-age cystic fibrosis children, participating in a year-long nutritional management study, were hospitalized at six-month intervals for balance studies during which they continued "free-choice" diets and their usual enzyme supplementation. Stools were analyzed for fat and protein by conventional methods and for carbohydrate using a recently validated anthrone method. Despite persistent fat and protein malabsorption, less than 1% of ingested carbohydrate was lost intact in the stools.

1. The metabolism of potassium nonan-5-[35S]sulphate, a symmetrical secondary alkylsulphate ester, was investigated in the rat. Oral administration of the radiolabelled ester was followed by the elimination of the majority of radioactivity in the urine.

Lateralisation of memory functions in epileptic patients by use of the sodium amytal (Wada) technique.

Lateralisation of speech and memory functions was determined in 27 patients, being assessed for surgical treatment of unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy, using the sodium amytal procedure. The most common outcome with regard to language was the retention of normal left hemisphere dominance, regardless of handedness or side of lesion. In contrast, memory functions were most often to be found only in the unaffected hemisphere, also regardless of handedness or side of lesion.

Anxiety of non-rooming-in parents of hospitalized children.

This study examined levels of anxiety in 51 parents who did not room in with their young hospitalized children. The Spielberger State-Trait Inventory was used to measure parental anxiety twice, with a 3-day interval. Levels of anxiety were significantly higher in parents with a greater number of children at home, less education, and lower social status.

Behavior as a diagnostic aid in failure-to-thrive.

The presence of a defined set of behaviors was examined in 67 hospitalized infants, 3-24 months old; 17 with organic failure-to-thrive (OFTT), 17 with nonorganic failure-to-thrive (NOFTT), and 33 with no signs of failure-to-thrive. The usefulness of assessing these behaviors to distinguish nonorganic from organic failure-to-thrive infants was evaluated. The frequency of behaviors per infant as well as the intensity of behaviors was greater for NOFTT.

Quantitation of fecal carbohydrate excretion in patients with short bowel syndrome.

We performed inpatient balance studies in 11 patients to evaluate the role of carbohydrate malabsorption in the pathogenesis of the diarrhea seen in short bowel syndrome. Stool weight, total reducing substance as measured by Clinitest, and total fecal carbohydrate as measured by anthrone were determined. Patients had markedly increased fecal carbohydrate excretion, up to 65% of dietary carbohydrate intake.

Relationships between neuropathology and cognitive functioning in temporal lobectomy patients.

Cognitive functions were examined before operation and 4 weeks after operation with respect to pathology in 40 patients who underwent temporal lobectomy for epilepsy. Hippocampal sclerosis was associated with febrile convulsions, an earlier onset of regular seizures, poorer preoperative intelligence and with a tendency towards greater cognitive improvement across the operation than found in patients with tumour-like malformations or non-specific pathology. Damage to the amygdala was associated with a poorer outcome for the retention in memory of verbal and non-verbal material.

Secretion of Zeatin, Ribosylzeatin, and Ribosyl-1'' -Methylzeatin by Pseudomonas savastanoi: Plasmid-Coded Cytokinin Biosynthesis.

Cytokinin production by strains of the phytopathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv savastanoi was measured by immunoaffinity chromatography of the culture medium on immobilized anti-cytokinin antibodies, followed by high performance liquid chromatography, radioimmunoassay and mass spectrometry. P. savastanoi strain PB213-2 secretes zeatin (80 nanograms per milliliter) and ribosylzeatin (80 nanograms per milliliter).

Prognostic importance of DNA flow cytometry in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

Eighty one cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were examined by DNA flow cytometry, using fixed embedded histological tissue. The frequency of detection of DNA aneuploidy and the values for S phase fractions depended on the histological subtype and grade of lymphoma. Twenty two of the patients with low grade centroblastic/centrocytic non-Hodgkin's lymphoma had repeat biopsies.

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma: a histochemical and immunohistochemical study.

In reviewing a large series of soft tissue sarcomas, nine cases of extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma have been retrieved. These tumours, which principally presented in middle-aged adults, have been examined histochemically to determine the heteroglycan content of their myxoid matrix and immunohistochemically for the presence of S-100 protein. The principal mucopolysaccharides identified were chondroitin-4 and 6-sulphate and keratan sulphate; each of the tumours was S-100 positive.

DNA flow cytometry of histological material from human gastric cancer.

DNA flow cytometry was performed on fixed embedded histological material from 56 radical gastrectomies for human gastric cancer. The ploidy and proportion of cells in the DNA synthetic phase of the cell cycle (S phase fraction) were estimated and the results correlated with histological features. DNA aneuploidy was encountered in 73 per cent of cases.
