Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease which kills an estimated 50,000 people each year, with its deadly impact confined mainly to lower to middle income countries. Leishmania parasites are transmitted to human hosts by sand fly vectors during blood feeding. Recent experimental work shows that transmission is modulated by the patchy landscape of infection in the host's skin, and the parasite population dynamics within the vector.

An extended nitro-functionalised 1,2,4-triazole ligand has been used to induce considerable lattice distortion in a 2-D Hofmann framework material via competing supramolecular interactions. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses on [Fe3(N-cintrz)6(Pd(CN)4)3]·6H2O (N-cintrz: (E)-3-(2-nitrophenyl)acrylaldehyde) reveal a substantial deviation from a regular Hofmann structure, in particular as the intra- and inter-layer contacts are dominated by hydrogen-bonding interactions rather than the typical π-stacking arrays. Also, the 2-D Hofmann layers show an assortment of ligand conformations and local FeII coordination environments driven by the optimisation of competing supramolecular contacts.

It has recently been proposed that the dominant non-radiative decay mechanism in blue Ir(iii) phosphors at room temperature is due to the low-lying non-radiative metal-centred triplet states. These are populated thermally via an activated transition from the highly radiative metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer states that are initially populated due to intersystem crossing following the radiative or electronic excitation of the phosphor. We apply transition state theory to quantitatively calculate the non-radiative decay rate of a family of Ir(iii) complexes containing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands.

The G-quadruplex (GQ) is a well-studied non-canonical DNA structure formed by G-rich sequences found at telomeres and gene promoters. Biological studies suggest that GQs may play roles in regulating gene expression, DNA replication, and DNA repair. The influence of temperature on the adsorption of metal ions at the solid-water interface is often overlooked, despite the important role that adsorption plays in metal-ion fate and transport in the natural environment where temperatures vary widely. Herein, we examine the temperature-dependent adsorption of uranium, a widespread radioactive contaminant, onto the ubiquitous iron oxide, hematite. The multitemperature batch adsorption data and surface complexation models indicate that the adsorption of uranium, as the hexavalent uranyl (UO) ion, increases significantly with increasing temperature, with an adsorption enthalpy (Δ) of +71 kJ mol.

The risks of environmental exposures of quantum dot (QD) nanoparticles are increasing, but these risks are difficult to assess because fundamental questions remain about factors affecting the mobility of QDs. Promyelocytic blast crisis arising from chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is rare.
