A World Café Approach to Exploring Perspectives on Diabetes Stigma in the United Kingdom.

Introduction: Research has found that a high percentage of people with diabetes experience stigma, with perceptions of stigma being significantly higher among people with Type 1 diabetes compared to those with Type 2 diabetes. These experiences of diabetes stigma can lead to psychological, behavioural and medical consequences. The aim of the current study was to explore the perceptions of diabetes stigma and propose strategies for addressing this from the perspective of key stakeholders.

Bidirectional Multiphoton Communication between Remote Superconducting Nodes.

Quantum communication test beds provide a useful resource for experimentally investigating a variety of communication protocols. Here we demonstrate a superconducting circuit test bed with bidirectional multiphoton state transfer capability using time-domain shaped wave packets. The system we use to achieve this comprises two remote nodes, each including a tunable superconducting transmon qubit and a tunable microwave-frequency resonator, linked by a 2 m-long superconducting coplanar waveguide, which serves as a transmission line.

Splitting phonons: Building a platform for linear mechanical quantum computing.

Linear optical quantum computing provides a desirable approach to quantum computing, with only a short list of required computational elements. The similarity between photons and phonons points to the interesting potential for linear mechanical quantum computing using phonons in place of photons. Although single-phonon sources and detectors have been demonstrated, a phononic beam splitter element remains an outstanding requirement.

Raising an Indigenous academic community: a strength-based approach to Indigenous early career mentoring in higher education.

This paper reports on Indigenous early career researchers' experiences of mentoring in Australian higher education, with data drawn from a longitudinal qualitative study. Interviews were conducted with 30 Indigenous participants. A consistent theme in the findings and contemporary critical literature has been a reaction against institutionalised and hierarchical cloning and investment models of mentoring that reinforce the accumulation of White cultural capital, in favour of strength-based relational models tailored to build Indigenous cultural wealth in parallel with career development.

"No-one realises what we go through as Type 1s": A qualitative photo-elicitation study on coping with diabetes.

Aims: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) has physical, emotional, and social consequences and little is known how adults cope with the condition long term. This research aimed to use a novel photo-elicitation technique to gain in-depth insight into the personal coping experiences of adults living with T1D.

Methods: In-depth photo elicitation interviews were employed to collect data and transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis.

Entanglement Purification and Protection in a Superconducting Quantum Network.

High-fidelity quantum entanglement is a key resource for quantum communication and distributed quantum computing, enabling quantum state teleportation, dense coding, and quantum encryption. Any sources of decoherence in the communication channel, however, degrade entanglement fidelity, thereby increasing the error rates of entangled state protocols. Entanglement purification provides a method to alleviate these nonidealities by distilling impure states into higher-fidelity entangled states.

Influences of decisions to attend a national diabetes prevention programme from people living in a socioeconomically deprived area.

Aims: To explore key influences of decisions in participants from a socioeconomically deprived area to attend the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NHSDPP). The NHSDPP is a lifestyle behaviour change programme for adults with prediabetes living in England.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 35 participants who had attended the initial assessment, but not yet started the NHSDPP; 23 were classified as "attenders," 12 as "non-attenders" after they were interviewed based on whether they had attended the first NHSDPP session or not.

An in-school social norms approach intervention for reducing unhealthy snacking behaviours amongst 11-12-year-olds.

Objectives: Adolescents tend to overestimate the extent of peers' unhealthy snacking consumption and such misperceptions have been associated with increased personal unhealthy snacking. This study aims to test whether a Social Norms Approach (SNA) intervention which challenges these misperceptions of peers' unhealthy snacking will have a positive effect on students' personal unhealthy snacking behaviours, related attitudes, and behavioural intentions.

Design: A quasi-experimental study tested the effectiveness of an in-school SNA intervention (n = 163) compared to a control condition (n = 95) among 11-12-year-old students.

A social norms approach intervention to address misperceptions of anti-vaccine conspiracy beliefs amongst UK parents.

Anti-vaccine conspiracy beliefs among parents can reduce vaccination intentions. Parents' beliefs in anti-vaccine conspiracy theories are also related to their perceptions of other parents' conspiracy beliefs. Further, research has shown that parents hold misperceptions of anti-vaccine conspiracy belief norms: UK parents over-estimate the anti-vaccine conspiracy beliefs of other parents.

What behavior change techniques are associated with effective interventions to reduce screen time in 0-5 year olds? A narrative systematic review.

Screen time has been linked to obesity in young children. Therefore, this systematic review aims to investigate which Behavior Change Techniques (BCTs) are associated with the effectiveness of interventions to reduce screen time in 0-5 year olds. Seven databases were searched, including PsycInfo, PubMed, and Medline.

Normative misperceptions of unhealthy snacking amongst 11- to 12-year-old secondary school students.

Younger adolescents are at an age where they have increasing control of their diet, and where peers become an important social reference for acceptable and normative dietary behaviours. These normative perceptions are often inaccurate and can lead to the development of unhealthy eating practices; although, the role of normative misperceptions of peers' unhealthy snacking behaviours in younger adolescents' personal snacking behaviours is not clear. The current study was a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from a social norms-based healthy eating intervention sampling two secondary schools in deprived areas of England.

Deterministic multi-qubit entanglement in a quantum network.

The generation of high-fidelity distributed multi-qubit entanglement is a challenging task for large-scale quantum communication and computational networks. The deterministic entanglement of two remote qubits has recently been demonstrated with both photons and phonons. However, the deterministic generation and transmission of multi-qubit entanglement has not been demonstrated, primarily owing to limited state-transfer fidelities.

Remote Entanglement via Adiabatic Passage Using a Tunably Dissipative Quantum Communication System.

Effective quantum communication between remote quantum nodes requires high fidelity quantum state transfer and remote entanglement generation. Recent experiments have demonstrated that microwave photons, as well as phonons, can be used to couple superconducting qubits, with a fidelity limited primarily by loss in the communication channel [P. Kurpiers et al.

A systematic review of recruitment strategies and behaviour change techniques in group-based diabetes prevention programmes focusing on uptake and retention.

Background: Many countries worldwide have developed diabetes prevention programmes (DPPs) that involve lifestyle modification. Research has shown that uptake and retention of DPPs are important and by exploring recruitment strategies and behaviour change techniques (BCTs) used, factors that are most effective in promoting uptake and retention can be identified.

Objectives: This review aims to identify recruitment strategies of group-based DPPs that are associated with high uptake and common BCTs associated with high retention.

'She's not obese, she's a normal 5-year-old and she keeps up with the other kids': families' reasons for not attending a family-based obesity management programme.

Aims: To discover the reasons behind invited families' lack of engagement with a family-based childhood obesity programme in a deprived area.

Methods: Interviews were conducted with 10 families who were invited to join the programme, but declined to engage. There were two distinct subgroups of participants: those who had no interest in attending the programme and those who showed initial interest yet did not continue attending.

Offenders' perceptions of the UK prison smoking ban.

Purpose: Despite overall reductions in levels of smoking in the UK, rates of offender smoking remain high. In 2016, it was announced that prisons in England and Wales would gradually introduce a smoking ban. The purpose of this paper is to explore offenders' perceptions around the upcoming smoking ban.

Improving cardiovascular disease risk communication in the UK national health service health check programme.

Objective: To develop and test training to improve practitioners' confidence and perceived understanding when communicating cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk using novel tools and metrics.

Methods: A CVD risk communication training workshop was developed through interviews with patients and practitioners delivering Health Checks, a literature review, NICE guidance and the UK Health Check competency framework. It was pilot-tested with practitioners delivering Health Checks in the UK.

Phonon-mediated quantum state transfer and remote qubit entanglement.

Phonons, and in particular surface acoustic wave phonons, have been proposed as a means to coherently couple distant solid-state quantum systems. Individual phonons in a resonant structure can be controlled and detected by superconducting qubits, enabling the coherent generation and measurement of complex stationary phonon states. We report the deterministic emission and capture of itinerant surface acoustic wave phonons, enabling the quantum entanglement of two superconducting qubits.

Delivering in-school interventions to improve dietary behaviours amongst 11- to 16-year-olds: A systematic review.

Childhood obesity is a global health concern, which has both short- and long-term health consequences for the individual, and is a potential burden on health care services and the wider economy. The school environment is a setting where changes can be applied to dietary behaviours, as schools have direct and intensive contact with children. This systematic review evaluated school-based interventions designed to improve dietary behaviours among adolescents (11- to 16-year-olds).

Quantum control of surface acoustic-wave phonons.

One of the hallmarks of quantum physics is the generation of non-classical quantum states and superpositions, which has been demonstrated in several quantum systems, including ions, solid-state qubits and photons. However, only indirect demonstrations of non-classical states have been achieved in mechanical systems, despite the scientific appeal and technical utility of such a capability, including in quantum sensing, computation and communication applications. This is due in part to the highly linear response of most mechanical systems, which makes quantum operations difficult, as well as their characteristically low frequencies, which hinder access to the quantum ground state.

"Living in a foreign country": experiences of staff-patient communication in inpatient stroke settings for people with post-stroke aphasia and those supporting them.

Staff-patient communication in in-patient stroke settings is viewed as challenging for stroke survivors with aphasia and those supporting them. This study sought to explore these experiences from the perspectives of stroke survivors, their carers and healthcare professionals. A qualitative study where stroke survivors with aphasia, carers and healthcare professionals were interviewed (audio-recorded) one-to-one or via focus group.

A systematic review of the effectiveness of smartphone applications that encourage dietary self-regulatory strategies for weight loss in overweight and obese adults.

The aim of this paper is to systematically review the evidence to explore whether smartphone applications that use self-regulatory strategies are beneficial for weight loss in overweight and obese adults over the age of 18 years. Sixteen electronic databases were searched for articles published up to April 2015 including MEDLINE, OVID, Ingenta, PSYCARTICLES and PSYCINFO, CINAHL, Sportdiscus, Science Direct, Web of Knowledge, Cochrane Library, JSTOR, EBSCO, Proquest, Wiley and Google Scholar. Twenty nine eligible studies were retrieved of which six studies met the inclusion criteria.
