A double construct vaccine of turkey herpesvirus (HVT) was prepared that contains the fusion (F) gene from Newcastle disease virus (NDV) and the viral protein 2 (VP2) gene from infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV). Safety of the vaccine (HVT-ND-IBD) was confirmed and efficacy was evaluated after subcutaneous (SC) vaccination at 1 day of age or the route of vaccination. Challenges were performed with velogenic NDV strains (Texas GB and Herts Weybridge 33/56), with different strains of IBDV (classical strain STC; very virulent strain CS89 and variant E strain) and with Marek's disease virus (MDV) strain RB1B.

Pulmonary carcinoids are neuroendocrine tumors histopathologically subclassified into typical (TC; no necrosis, <2 mitoses per 2 mm) and atypical (AC; necrosis or 2 to 10 mitoses per 2 mm). The reproducibility of lung carcinoid classification, however, has not been extensively studied and may be hampered by the presence of pyknotic apoptosis mimicking mitotic figures. Furthermore, prediction of prognosis based on histopathology varies, especially for ACs.

Assessing the ability of current equine influenza vaccines to provide cross-protection against emerging strains is important. Horses not vaccinated previously and seronegative for equine influenza based on haemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay were assigned at random to vaccinated (n=7) or non-vaccinated (control, n=5) groups. Vaccination was performed twice four weeks apart with a 1 ml influenza subunit (A/eq/Prague/1/56, A/eq/Newmarket/1/93, A/eq/Newmarket/2/93), tetanus toxoid vaccine with Matrix-C adjuvant (EquilisPrequenza Te).

Equine influenza is a contagious disease caused by equine influenza virus which belongs to the orthomyxovirus family. Outbreaks of equine influenza cause severe economic loses to the horse industry and consequently horses in competition are required to be regularly vaccinated against equine influenza. Unlike the existing inactivated vaccines, Equilis Prequenza Te is the only one able to induce protection against clinical disease and virus excretion after a primary vaccination course consisting of two vaccine applications 4-6 weeks apart until the recommended time of the third vaccination.

This study aimed at identifying cognitive and emotional representations relevant for improving health care communication and quality of life (QoL) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). One-hundred-seventy-one COPD outpatients completed questionnaires on illness perceptions and QoL. After controlling for the effects of age, pulmonary function, and dyspnea, patients with decreased attention to symptoms, with more positive beliefs about the effects and outcomes of their illness, and with less strong emotional reactions to the illness, had higher QoL scores.

It has been recommended that modern equine influenza vaccines should contain an A/equi-1 strain and A/equi-2 strains of the American and European-like subtype. We describe here the efficacy of a modern updated inactivated equine influenza-herpesvirus combination vaccine against challenge with a recent American-like isolate of equine influenza (A/equine-2/Kentucky/95 (H3N8). The vaccine contains inactivated Influenza strains A-equine-1/Prague'56, A-equine-2/Newmarket-1/'93 (American lineage) and A-equine-2/ Newmarket-2/93 (Eurasian lineage) and inactivated EHV-1 strain RacH and EHV-4 strain V2252.

So far, most apparently successful immunodeficiency virus vaccines have only been tested against challenge with cell culture-adapted virus. However, even live priming of cats with feline herpesvirus (FHV) vectors expressing the FIV gag and env gene followed by inactivated booster vaccination with fixed FIX infected cell vaccine proved non-protective against infection with a primary FIV isolate. An effective FIV vaccine for field applications therefore is still not underway.

Subunit vaccines prepared against feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection were evaluated in two trials. First, cats were immunized with bacterial expression products of an envelope fragment that contained the V3 neutralization domain of the FIV surface protein fused to either galactokinase (K-SU3) or glutathione-S-transferase (G-SU3). Quantitative and qualitative differences in the humoral immune response were observed with three adjuvants of which Quil A was the best in terms of total and virus neutralizing antibody.

In the period from May to September 1993 six patients underwent video-assisted lobectomy of the lung. Owing to the development of video optics and endoscopic devices video-assisted lobectomy is now possible; it appears to be a promising alternative to posterolateral thoracotomy. Potential advantages of this method in comparison with posterolateral thoracotomy are: less pain and improved pulmonary function in the first 24 hours postoperatively, better preservation of shoulder girdle strength and movement, shorter recovery period and hospital stay, and a better cosmetic result.

A case is reported of life-threatening haemoptysis as a result of an anomalous communication between a bronchial artery and pulmonary vein, demonstrated by angiography. The patient recovered following bilobectomy of the right lower and middle lobes. When a systemic artery is involved in an arteriovenous malformation of the lung, haemodynamics are different compared with those present in malformations fed by the pulmonary artery.

Information gathered in the Zutphen Study, the Dutch contribution to the Seven Countries Study that started in the 1960s, was used in this study. Of the 1266 men invited to take part in the 1985 survey, 939 (74%) participated. All participants were interviewed according to the BMRC chronic non-specific lung disease (CNSLD) questionnaire and medically examined for CNSLD complaints by a trained physician.
