1. Cat pancreases were exposed to [3H]ouabain either by perfusion, or by incubation of slices, with Krebs--Henseleit bicarbonate solution containing [3H]ouabain, and [3H]ouabain binding sites were localized by light microscopical autoradiography. 2.

Four patients developed hair loss, depigmentation of hair, ichthyosis, and blepharoconjunctivitis during treatment with large doses of dixyrazine (Esucos, UCB, Belgium). The hair, skin, and eyes returned to normal within 2 months of withdrawal of dixyrazine, without any other treatment.

Dopa, catecholamines, and dopac were determined in superior cervical ganglia of albino rats. The average amount of dopa in ganglia of control animals was 1.1--1.

45Ca2+ exchange and total calcium content were measured in isolated mouse pancreatic acini. 45Ca2+ uptake could be described as the sum of a constant and a single exponential kinetic component; about 60% of total acinar calcium was exchangeable. Stimulation by bethanechol increased 45Ca2+ uptake, but the time course of uptake could be fit only by the addition of a more rapid kinetic component without any change in the total exchangeable Ca2+.

In order to avoid complications induced by long-term infusion of insulin into the portal vein, we examined the effect of intraperitoneal (ip) insulin infusion on arterial plasma insulin and glucose concentrations in 6 pigs, made diabetic by a constant intravenous (iv) infusion of glucose, epinephrine and propranolol. Insulin was infused by an electromechanical programmable mini-pump (Pharmaject Micro Infusion System, Pharmacia Electronics) as a booster injection of 46 mU highly purified porcine insulin Leo/kg body weight, followed by 3 infusion periods of 30 min each with stepwise decreasing rates of 1.6--0.

In 12 normals serum calcitonin (CT) concentration decreased significantly when eating wtih a return to basal value and a significant postprandial fall. No difference was observed in the food-stimulated CT secretion between duodenal ulcer patients and normals. In 25 patients with ulcer negative dyspepsia a significant increase in serum CT concentration occurred during food intake followed by a return to basal level and a secondary significant rise.

The changes in pH, pCO2, pO2, BE and SBC during storage of venous porcine blood during 24 hours at different temperatures were measured (Table I) and illustrated in Fig 1. Correction table (Table III) for determination of the initial acid-base data are constructed based upon the regression equations in Table II. The changes in the acid-base values of swine blood differ from that of bovine, equine, and canine blood (Table IV).

The changes in pH, pCO2, pO2, BE, and SBC during storage of anaerobic drawn arterial blood for 24 hours at different temperatures were measured (Table Ia, Ib) and illustrated (Fig. 1). Correction tables (Table III) for determination of the initial acid-base data are constructed based upon the regression equations in Table II.

20 corticosteroids ointments and 19 corticosteroid creams available on the Swedish market in January 1977 were tested for their blanching effect. Three ointments and three creams showing pronounced blanching were tested only without occlusion. Hydrocortisone preparations were tested only with occlusion.

Intracellular potassium ion activities (aiK+) and membrane potentials were measured with double-barrelled, potassium-specific microelectrodes in superfused mouse pancreas and submandibular gland. Stimulation with the cholinergic agonist bethanechol caused a marked decrease in aiK+ in the submandibular gland, whereas no change in aiK+ could be detected in the pancreas. This indicates that bethanechol increases the permeability of the cell membranes to potassium ions in the submandibular gland but not in the pancreas.

A double-blind, random selection comparison was made of the therapeutic effects in acute herpes zoster of (A) 40% idoxuridine (IDU) dissolved in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO), or one of the following ointments: (B) a basis of polyethylene glycol, (C) a basis with 60% DMSO, (D) a basis with 5% IDU and 60% DMSO, and (E) a basis with 40% IDU and 60% DMSO. Each group comprised 20 patients. The patients were evaluated daily until skin healing and then at 1,3, and 6 months by registering 4 neurological signs, 5 clinical evaluations of skin pathology and 4 photographic evaluations of the skin lesions.

1451 patients with IDDM, onset before 1953 and before the age of 30 were followed until death or until 1976. Survival with diabetes, relative survival and the influence of supervision on survival were examined. It is shown that only 50% of the patients survived more than 30 diabetes years.

The changes in pH, pCO2, pO2, BE, SBC, and lactic during storage of equine venous and arterial blood in 24 hours at different temperatures were measured (tables I, II), and illustrated (fig, 1, 2, 3). Correction tables (tables VI, VII) for determination of the initial acid-base data are constructed based on regression equations (tables IV, V) of the in vitro changes of the blood. The changes in the acid-base values of equine blood differ from that of bovine and canine blood (table III).

The changes in pH, pCO2, pO2, based excess, standard bicarbonate and lactic acid during storage of canine blood 24 hours at different temperatures were measured (table I a, b) and illustrated (figs. 1 and 2). A correction table (table V) for determination of the initial acid-base data is constructed based upon regression equations (table IV) of the in vitro changes during storage of the blood.

The possible existence of circulating pancreatic type glucagon (immunoreactive glucagon as measured with a highly specific antibody) of extrapancreatic origin was investigated in 20-25 kg pigs after pancreatectomy. In intact conscious animals intravenous arginine infusions stimulated glucagon as well as insulin secretion, while blood glucose remained unaffected. Two weeks after pancreatectomy, and 48 hours after insulin withdrawal, basal glucagon and glucose concentrations were elevated (from 22 +/- 3.

In 307 patients with diabetes mellitus, developed prior to 1933 and before age 31 it was demonstrated that: (1) frequent contact with a specialized diabetes clinic from an early stage of the disease; (2) a good quality of "metabolic control"; (3) a low insulin dose; (4) a body weight of 10% less than ideal; and (5) a mean blood pressure below 100 mm Hg, all had significantly beneficial effects upon the survival. It was also found that patients domiciled in Copenhagen had a significantly better prognosis than patients domiciled outside Copenhagen. Frequent contact with a diabetes centre was accompanied by an appreciable decrease in disabling late diabetic complications.
