The mechanisms by which aerobic fitness confers beneficial effects on cognition with aging are unclear but may involve cerebrovascular adaptations. In a cross-sectional study of women from the community (n=42; age range=50-90 years), we sought to determine whether physical fitness is associated with higher cerebrovascular function, and its relationship to cognition. Main outcome measures included resting cerebral blood flow, cerebrovascular reserve, physical fitness (i.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effects of a specific omega-3 fatty acid (E-EPA) supplement against a placebo in reducing hot flashes and improving quality of life in middle-aged women.
  • A total of 120 women aged 40-55 with moderate to severe psychological distress were randomly assigned to either the E-EPA or placebo group for 8 weeks, focusing on changes in hot flash frequency, intensity, and quality of life.
  • Results showed that the E-EPA group had a significantly greater reduction in hot flash frequency compared to the placebo group, along with improved odds of experiencing less frequent hot flashes, although overall quality of life improvements were similar for both groups.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relations among reactive oxygen species (ROS), hypoxia inducible factor (HIF-1 alpha) gene expression, HIF-1 alpha target gene erythropoietin (EPO), and vascular endothelium growth factor (VEGF) in humans. Five healthy men (32+/-7 years, mean+/-SD) were exposed to 12 h of sustained poikilocapnic hypoxia (P(ET)O(2)=60 mmHg). DNA oxidation (8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, 8-OHdG), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), EPO, and VEGF were measured in plasma and HIF-1 alpha mRNA was assessed in leukocytes before and after 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 h of exposure to hypoxia.

The purpose of this study was to assess whether the cerebrovascular response to hypercapnia is blunted in OSA patients and if this could alter the ventilatory response to hypercapnia before and after CPAP therapy. We measured the cerebrovascular, cardiovascular and ventilatory responses to hypercapnia in 8 patients with OSA (apnoea-hypopnoea index=101+/-10) before and after 4-6 weeks of CPAP therapy and in 10 control subjects who did not undergo CPAP therapy. The cerebrovascular and ventilatory responses to hypercapnia were not different between OSA and controls at baseline or follow-up.

We investigated the effect of ovarian hormones and aging on breathing pattern [pulmonary minute ventilation (V(E))], tidal volume (V(T)), breathing frequency (F(b)), and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) in women. Recordings of V(E) and electrocardiogram (ECG) were obtained from 23 healthy women (10 premenopausal, 13 postmenopausal) under resting, isocapnic hypoxia (IH), and euoxic hypercapnia (EH) conditions. Premenopausal women were tested on three different days, each day corresponding to a specific phase of the menstrual cycle (follicular, mid-cycle, and luteal); postmenopausal women (PMW) were tested on 1 day only.

Do people's worldviews change across the life course? Beliefs in the benevolence (goodness) of the world and their relations with age and well-being were examined in a 2-year study of a nationally representative sample (N = 2,138) ranging in age from 18 to 101 years. Multilevel modeling analyses controlling for demographics, mental health history, prior experience with stressful life events, and other key beliefs indicated that benevolence beliefs were positively associated with well-being and that these associations were stronger with increasing age. Analyses also demonstrated that individuals' benevolence beliefs increased during the study, were positively associated with age, and increased with the experience of bereavement, although they declined with the experience of other negative events.

We examined the effect of euoxic hypercapnia on middle cerebral artery (MCA) blood flow velocity waveform parameters in pre- and postmenopausal women by exposing 24 healthy women (12 pre-, 12 postmenopausal) to hypercapnia for 20 min. MCA blood flow velocity was measured continuously by transcranial Doppler ultrasound. The data were run through an algorithm that detected the feature points of the waveforms and then analyzed for statistically significant group differences.

The aims of the present study were to review the risk of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) among education workers, particularly pregnant women, and to evaluate preventive measures, in a context of endemicity, outbreak or epidemic as observed in the province of Quebec. The literature was reviewed and persons in charge of IMD surveillance in France, Quebec, the United Kingdom and the United States were interviewed. Surveys of asymptomatic carriage of Neisseria meningitidis show that transmission among students is higher than transmission between students and teachers.

The ventilatory response to carbon dioxide (CO2) measured by modified rebreathing (SrVE) is closer to that measured by the steady-state method (SsVE) than is the response measured by Read's rebreathing method. Furthermore, the value estimated by the steady-state method depends upon the number of data points used to measure it. We planned to assess if these observations were also true for cerebral blood flow (CBF), as measured by steady-state (SsCBF) and modified rebreathing (SrCBF) tests.

The effect of spontaneous beat-to-beat mean arterial blood pressure (ABP) fluctuations and breath-to-breath end-tidal carbon dioxide (PETCO2) and end-tidal oxygen (PETO2) fluctuations on beat-to-beat cerebral bloodflow velocity (CBFV) variations is studied using a multiple coherence function. Multiple coherence is a measure of the extent to which the output, CBFV, can be represented as a linear time invariant system of multiple input signals. Analysis of experimental measurements from 13 different healthy subjects reveal that, with additional inputs, PETCO2 and PETO2, the multiple coherence for frequencies <0.

Objective: The success of an amylin analogue in weight loss trials has generated interest in amylin as a physiological satiety signal. Little is known about how plasma amylin responds to macronutrients. This study examined the effects of a high-carbohydrate meal (CHO), a high-fat meal (FAT) or a continued fast (FAST) on amylin concentrations and correlations among other satiety hormones and measures of appetite.

In this paper, I argue two main points. First, in premarital, sexual partnerships in rural Malawi, the purpose of money exchange extends beyond the alleviation of female partners' economic constraints, and, second, by clarifying this broader purpose, it becomes possible to recognize where women exert control over their own sexual selves. These findings come from field observations and a rich set of in-depth interviews (N=54), bolstered on occasion by survey data, conducted with young women and men, aged 15-24 years, in the Balaka district in the southern region of the country.
