Accurate and cost-effective prediction of aboveground biomass (AGB), belowground biomass (BGB), and the total (ABGB) at stand-level within tropical forests is crucial for effective forest ecological management and the provision of forest ecosystem services. Although there has been research on simultaneously fitting biomass equations for tree components, rather few studies focus on simultaneously predicting AGB and BGB at stand-level while maintaining additivity. We developed innovative Deep Learning Additive Models (DLAMs) for the simultaneous predictions of stand-level AGB, BGB, and ABGB integrating forest stand, ecological, and environmental factors as predictive covariates and compared them with conventional weighted nonlinear seemingly unrelated regression (WNSUR) and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS).

Vaccine science, nanotechnology, and immunotherapy are at the forefront of cancer treatment strategies, each offering significant potential for enhancing tumor-specific immunity and establishing long-lasting immune memory to prevent tumor recurrence. Despite the promise of these personalized and precision-based anti-cancer approaches, challenges such as immunosuppression, suboptimal immune activation, and T-cell exhaustion continue to hinder their effectiveness. The limited clinical success of cancer vaccines often stems from difficulties in identifying effective antigens, efficiently targeting immune cells, lymphoid organs, and the tumor microenvironment, overcoming immune evasion, enhancing immunogenicity, and avoiding lysosomal degradation.

Article Synopsis
  • Alfalfa is a key forage crop, and a study analyzed 318 Medicago species—including 244 alfalfa samples—to explore seed morphology by measuring various traits like size, shape, and color.
  • The research demonstrated significant phenotypic diversity and established correlations among the traits, leading to a genome-wide association study (GWAS) that identified several important genes linked to these characteristics.
  • Machine learning was applied to further validate the findings and discover marker-trait associations, with one marker (S7_33375673) being crucial for predicting seed color intensity, thereby enhancing the understanding of seed morphology genetics in alfalfa and related species.

Though the federal government impacts private forest management across the United States through legislation such as the Clean Water Act, state-level regulations applied to private forest landowners vary remarkably. Despite this diversity of policies, little is known about how variations in regulatory intensity (defined here as number of forestry regulations) correlate with state-level political and socioeconomic characteristics. In this study, we use a quantitative approach to explore the intensity of regulation on forest practices impacting private landowners across all 50 states.

Consensus statements recommend the use of norepinephrine and/or vasopressin for hypotension in cardiac surgery. However, there is a paucity of data among other surgical subgroups and vasopressin analogs. Therefore, the authors conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to compare vasopressin-receptor agonists with norepinephrine for hypotension among those undergoing surgery with general anesthesia.

Background: Meniscal allograft transplantation (MAT) is an accepted and effective treatment option in the context of unsalvageable menisci, particularly in young and active patients. It has been shown to reduce pain and improve knee function in previously symptomatic patients. However, there is still limited knowledge about the long-term survival rates of allografts, the durability of clinical results, and the influence of patient-specific parameters, such as leg alignment, tibial slope, and preoperative International Cartilage Regeneration & Joint Preservation Society (ICRS) grade.
