The heterocystous cyanobacterium Nostoc commune UTEX 584 contains two nifH-like sequences (nifH1 and nifH2) in addition to nifHD. A region of DNA 1 kilobase upstream from the 5' end of nifH showed considerable sequence similarity to part of the published nifU sequences of Azotobacter vinelandii and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Current insurance practices discriminate against the arthritis patient who does not require acute-level care. Such practices inadequately deal with the financial barriers to the procurement of the health care services that are effective in relieving pain and increasing mobility and quality of life. A study was conducted to assess the nutrient intake of a group of 18 elderly men and women aged 67-85 years who attend a luncheon club in a North London Borough. Adequate intakes of most nutrients were demonstrated with the exception of zinc, although due to wide individual variation some people had intakes greatly below recommendations. The contribution of the luncheon club meal to the total diet varied widely between individuals.

A Reproductive Risk Factors Survey was carried out in 1982 in conjunction with a community-based distribution (CBD) program in Matamoros, Mexico, to determine whether the distribution of oral contraceptives to women through CBD programs exposes any demonstrable group of users to more health risks than if the program had not been put in place. The methodology involved interviews by nurses of program pill users and non-program pill users. Health indicators related to cardiovascular accidents were the main focus of comparison between the groups.

Events occurring at the time of insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD) are rarely studied, especially for parous women for whom, in theory, IUD contraception is most suitable. These events, although rare, cause personal distress, embarrassment and inconvenience and can have a negative impact on IUD acceptance. Sixty million women worldwide are using IUDs.

Profiles of phospholipid fatty acids and carotenoids in desiccated Nostoc commune (cyanobacteria) collected from China, Federal Republic of Germany, and Antarctica and in axenic cultures of the desiccation-tolerant strains N. commune UTEX 584 and Hydrocoleum strain GOEI were analyzed. The phospholipid fatty acid contents of the three samples of desiccated Nostoc species were all similar, and the dominant compounds were 16:1omega7c, 16:0, 18:2omega6, 18:3omega3, and 18:1omega7c.

This study was conducted among physical therapy students, nursing students, and interns and residents to compare beliefs about people with arthritis among these groups; compare the groups' beliefs about people with arthritis to their beliefs about people with five other handicapping conditions; and explore associations of the groups' beliefs about people with arthritis with their age, sex, and personal experience with the condition. For purposes of comparison with the health professions study groups, undergraduate students in an interpersonal communications class were also surveyed. Respondents answered a ten-item questionnaire for each of the six handicapping conditions.
