Objectives: This study compared whether different addiction treatment educational experiences were associated with physicians' attitudes toward patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) and perceived efficacy of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD).

Methods: Ohio physicians (n = 2757) with and without a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine (Drug Addiction Treatment Act 2000 [DATA 2000] waiver) were surveyed regarding their attitudes toward treating patients with OUD and on the effectiveness of MOUD. We divided physicians into 3 groups: physicians with DATA 2000 waivers, non-waivered physicians experiential training, and non-waivered physicians experiential training.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are useful tools to dissect the neutralizing antibody response against the adeno-associated virus (AAV) capsids used as gene therapy delivery vectors. This study structurally characterizes the interactions of 21 human-derived antibodies from patients treated with the AAV9 vector, Zolgensma , utilizing high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy. The majority of the bound antibodies do not conform to the icosahedral symmetry of the capsid, thus requiring localized reconstructions.

Article Synopsis
  • About 15% of pregnant women face anxiety disorders, and this study evaluates the acceptability of exposure therapy during this period.
  • Interviews with 45 pregnant women and 6 therapists revealed five key themes reflecting their experiences with time-intensive and weekly cognitive-behavioral therapy.
  • Findings suggest that exposure therapy is effective and acceptable during pregnancy, emphasizing the need for perinatal expertise among therapists and proposing a hybrid model combining online and in-person support.

Objective: Currently, the variety of speech recognition tests used to evaluate cochlear implant (CI) recipients makes it difficult to compare results, especially across languages. The Matrix Test limits contextual cues and is available in multiple languages, including American English. The current study investigated test format and noise type for the American English Matrix Test (AMT) and compared results to AzBio sentence scores in adult CI recipients.

Introduction: There is a gap between aspiring to co-produce and co-create value in integrated healthcare and realising that in practice, particularly with complex needs and multiple stakeholders. Key principles from literature on value-based healthcare offer a conceptual framework for building suitable care platforms to support practice. This paper outlines the Complex Care and Recovery Management Framework (CCaRM) as an example of co-platforming value-based healthcare within case level practice.

Mental health conditions research often relies on reductionist cultural assumptions about the population studied and instruments validated from majority populations. In exhaustively reviewing the limited body of Amish mental health conditions research, we find that studies are well-executed by methodological protocols but that findings are inconsistent or limited in generalizability, instrument validity remains contested, and study investigation into Amish cultural and religious dynamics is limited. A case study from a sizeable Amish community in Ohio illustrates how various ideologies-notably old Amish religious theology, the scientific-psychological, and the Evangelical Protestant-have generated population-internal controversies among the Amish over defining and treating mental health conditions, suggesting that mental health conditions research and diagnosis of ethnic religious adherents should better account for internal cultural-religious dynamics.

To examine the mental health and caregiving needs of significant others (including partners, parents, friends) to women who received acute psychiatric care either as inpatients or at home during the perinatal period. Cross-sectional survey of 98 significant others of 279 women who participated in a quasi-experimental cohort study of services for mothers with acute severe postpartum mental health diagnoses. Significant others completed an adapted General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ) and Involvement Evaluation Questionnaire (IEQ) to indicate their mental health needs and service use as well as caregiving activities.

Purpose: To examine factors associated with being re-admitted in the year after discharge from acute postpartum psychiatric treatment.

Methods: Secondary data analysis of information collected from mothers who were admitted to acute psychiatric services in the year after childbirth between 2013 and 2017. We carried out univariable analyses and multivariable hierarchical logistic regression to examine risk factors for women's re-admission to acute psychiatric care (inpatient or community crisis care) in the year following discharge.

Background: Compared to men in the general population, men in substance use treatment are more likely to perpetrate intimate partner abuse (IPA). The ADVANCE group intervention for men in substance use treatment is tailored to address substance use and IPA in an integrated way. In a feasibility trial pre-COVID, men who received the ADVANCE intervention via face-to-face group delivery showed reductions in IPA perpetration.

Background: People with psychosis have high rates of trauma, with a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) prevalence rate of approximately 15%, which exacerbates psychotic symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations. Pilot studies have shown that trauma-focused (TF) psychological therapies can be safe and effective in such individuals. This trial, the largest to date, will evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a TF therapy integrated with cognitive behaviour therapy for psychosis (TF-CBTp) on post-traumatic stress symptoms in people with psychosis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the effectiveness of psychiatric mother and baby units (MBUs) compared to non-MBU acute care for women with severe perinatal mental illness in terms of readmission rates within a year of discharge.
  • Results showed no significant difference in readmission rates between women who received MBU care and those who received other forms of acute care, while service satisfaction was notably higher in the MBU group.
  • The authors conclude that although MBU care did not lead to lower readmission rates, future research should focus on understanding the key elements that contribute to better outcomes in specialized perinatal care.

Impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia (IAH) is a major risk for severe hypoglycaemia in insulin treatment of type 1 diabetes (T1D). To explore the hypothesis that unhelpful health beliefs create barriers to regaining awareness, we conducted a multi-centre, randomised, parallel, two-arm trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02940873) in adults with T1D and treatment-resistant IAH and severe hypoglycaemia, with blinded analysis of 12-month recall of severe hypoglycaemia at 12 and/or 24 months the primary outcome.

Purpose: Studies of mental illness stigma reduction interventions have been criticised for failing to evaluate behavioural outcomes and mechanisms of action. This project evaluates training for medical students entitled 'Responding to Experienced and Anticipated Discrimination' (READ), developed to focus on skills in addition to attitudes and knowledge. We aimed to (i) evaluate the effectiveness of READ with respect to knowledge, attitudes, and clinical communication skills in responding to mental illness-related discrimination, and (ii) investigate whether its potential effectiveness was mediated via empathy or/and intergroup anxiety.
