Background: We describe early health services utilization for children diagnosed with medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency through newborn screening in Ontario, Canada, relative to a screen negative comparison cohort.

Methods: Eligible children were identified via newborn screening between April 1, 2006 and March 31, 2010. Age-stratified rates of physician encounters, emergency department (ED) visits and inpatient hospitalizations to March 31, 2012 were compared using incidence rate ratios (IRR) and incidence rate differences (IRD).

Body-worn IMU array reveals effects of load on performance in an outdoor obstacle course.

This study introduces a new method to understand how added load affects human performance across a broad range of athletic tasks (ten obstacles) embedded in an outdoor obstacle course. The method employs an array of wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) to wirelessly record the movements of major body segments to derive obstacle-specific metrics of performance. The effects of load are demonstrated on (N = 22) participants who each complete the obstacle course under four conditions including unloaded (twice) and with loads of 15% and 30% of their body weight (a total of 88 trials across the group of participants).

The creation of a national coalition to target adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a meeting report.

In this report, we document the discussions and recommendations of a national conference designed to create a coalition to tackle adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) held on June 6 and 7, 2017 in Hamilton, ON, Canada. The goal of the establishment of this coalition is to join the efforts of patients, parents, physicians, researchers and other stakeholders to identify stakeholders' perspectives and to categorize gaps in knowledge and target further AIS research and clinical care priorities. The participants' main priorities included focus on shared decision making regarding clinical and research priorities between the stakeholders on the clinical, research and policy sides with patients and families.

Promoting Mental Health and Wellness in Youth Through Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Sleep.

The medical benefits to youth conferred by physical activity, balanced nutrition, and quality sleep have been increasingly encouraged by medical and mental health providers. Emerging evidence continues to reveal benefits for youth mental health and well-being, including for youth with psychiatric disorders. This evidence seems multifactorial through both neurobiological and psychosocial systems, with common mechanisms present between physical activity, nutrition, and sleep.

EBMT prospective observational study on allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in T-prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL).

Preliminary data suggest that allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) may be effective in T-prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL). The purpose of the present observational study was to assess the outcome of allo-SCT in patients aged 65 years or younger with a centrally confirmed diagnosis of T-PLL. Patients were consecutively registered with the EBMT at the time of transplantation and followed by routine EBMT monitoring but with an extended dataset.

Severe cystic degeneration and intractable seizures in a newborn with molybdenum cofactor deficiency type B.

Newborns with cystic degeneration with or without intractable seizures should be investigated for inborn errors of metabolism, including molybdenum cofactor deficiency (MoCoD). MoCoD may present with non-specific hypoxic ischemic injury in the neonatal period with MRI showing extensive prenatally acquired cystic encephalomalacia involving grey and white matter. Most newborns with MoCoD will present with normal head size and brain appearance at birth and postnatally rapidly develop cystic encephalomalacia.

While human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has become a treatable disease with the development of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), chronic inflammation that affects the central nervous system and other organs is still common. Reliable methods are needed to study HIV-associated inflammatory biomarkers. In this study involving both plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), we compared multiplex bead array (MBA) to a relatively new technology based on microfluidics and glass nanoreactor (GNR) technology for the measurement of three commonly studied markers from HIV-infected individuals.

Disparities in Hypertension Control Across and Within Three Health Systems Participating in a Data-Sharing Collaborative.

Introduction: We aimed to standardize data collection from 3 health systems (HS1, HS2, HS3) participating in the San Francisco Bay Collaborative Research Network, and compare rates and predictors of uncontrolled blood pressure among hypertensive adults to identify opportunities for regional collaboration in quality improvement.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study using deidentified electronic health record data from all primary care patients with at least 1 visit in a 2-year period, using standard data definitions in a common data repository. Primary outcome was uncontrolled blood pressure at the most recent primary care visit.

Returning to Sport After Gymnastics Injuries.

Acute and overuse injuries are a common experience for artistic gymnasts; however, this population has unique needs when returning to their sport after an injury due to the technical demands imposed during gymnastics. We reviewed the current literature regarding return to play (RTP) in artistic gymnasts and developed four goals: 1) to define the guiding principles used to determine RTP in sports, 2) to identify factors that affect recovery progression among gymnasts, 3) to determine how different injury types affect RTP protocols, and 4) to create structured RTP protocols specific to gymnasts based on sex and body part injured. By establishing these guidelines, we hope to provide guidance to medical providers through a standardized approach for returning gymnasts to their sport.

A Tool to Measure Young Adults' Food Intake: Design and Development of an Australian Database of Foods for the Eat and Track Smartphone App.

Background: Dietary assessment is reliant on the collection of accurate food and beverage consumption data. Technology has been harnessed to standardize recording and provide automatic nutritional analysis to reduce cost and researcher burden.

Objective: To better assess the diet of young adults, especially relating to the contribution of foods prepared outside the home, a database was needed to support a mobile phone data collection app.

Epidemiology and Pathophysiology of Gastroparesis.

Gastroparesis is a complex syndrome with symptoms that include nausea, vomiting, and postprandial abdominal pain, and is frequently accompanied by significant delays in gastric emptying. The pathophysiology of diabetic gastroparesis is fairly well understood; however, idiopathic gastroparesis, which accounts for one-third of all cases, may stem from infections, or autoimmune or neurologic disorders, among other causes. To date, few population-based studies have estimated the true prevalence and incidence of gastroparesis.

The biodiversity hotspot of New Caledonia hosts high levels of endemism (74% of flora) that is threatened increasingly by climate change, habitat reduction, and invasive species. The fruit-eating red-vented bulbul () is currently invading the main island of the archipelago, and its recent dispersal out of urbanized habitats raises questions about its potential to disperse noxious plant seeds along urban corridors and beyond. Indeed, the red-vented bulbul is considered a vector of several introduced plant species in its alien range including , , and .
