Enhancing immune response and survival in hepatocellular carcinoma with novel oncolytic Jurona virus and immune checkpoint blockade.

Members of the genus including Jurona virus (JURV) have emerged as promising immunotherapeutic agents, characterized by their tumor selectivity, fast kinetics, low seroprevalence, and minimal toxicity in humans. Here, we demonstrate that the administration of JURV leads to tumor regression in both hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) xenograft and syngeneic models. Furthermore, our findings indicate that combining JURV and anti-PD-1 therapy reduced tumor burden and improved survival rates over JURV or anti-PD-1 alone in an orthotopic HCC model.

We applied a newly developed molecular sex identification method, in combination with a SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) panel for inferring the population of origin, for more than 300 large Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT) collected over several years from newly reclaimed feeding grounds in the Northeast Atlantic. The vast majority (95%) of individuals were genetically assigned to the eastern Atlantic population, which migrates between spawning grounds in the Mediterranean and feeding grounds in the Northeast Atlantic.

Cultivating compassion in medicine: a toolkit for medical students to improve self-kindness and enhance clinical care.

Background: Compassionate care lies at the foundation of good patient care and is a quality that patients and providers continue to value in the fast-paced setting of contemporary medicine. Compassion is often discussed superficially in medical school curricula, but the practical aspect of learning this skill is often not taught using a formal framework. In the present work, the authors present an 8-session curriculum with a mindfulness-based approach to compassion that addresses this need.

Interferon gamma (IFNγ) is a critical cytokine known for its diverse roles in immune regulation, inflammation, and tumor surveillance. However, while IFNγ levels were elevated in sera of most newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients, its complex interplay in AML remains insufficiently understood. Objectives: To determine the utility of using total peripheral systemic vascular resistance assessed using non-invasive cardiac monitor for individualizing the duration of postpartum magnesium sulfate in individuals with preeclampsia with severe features.

Study Design: Single center pilot randomized controlled trial in which singleton pregnant individuals with preeclampsia with severe features were randomized to 24 h of postpartum magnesium sulfate per standard of care (control group) or individualized duration of postpartum magnesium sulfate based on reduction in post-delivery systemic vascular resistance (intervention group). In a 2016 screen of natural product extracts, a new family of natural products, the cahuitamycins, was discovered and found to inhibit biofilm formation in the human pathogen . The proposed molecular structures contained an unusual piperazic acid residue, which piqued interest related to their structure/function and biosynthesis. Herein we disclose the first total synthesis of the proposed structure of cahuitamycin A in a 12-step longest linear sequence and 18% overall yield.

Deletions on the long arm of chromosome 9 (del(9q)) are recurrent abnormalities in about 2 % of acute myeloid leukemia cases, which usually involve HNRNPK and are frequently associated with other known aberrations. Based on an Hnrnpk haploinsufficient mouse model, a recent study demonstrated a function of hnRNP K in pathogenesis of myeloid malignancies via the regulation of cellular proliferation and myeloid differentiation programs. Here, we provide evidence that reduced hnRNP K expression results in the dysregulated expression of C/EBPα and additional transcription factors.

Partnership in Cancer Research (PCAR) Program Increases Medical Student Knowledge and Confidence to Perform Cancer Research.

Arkansas has a high cancer burden, and a pressing need exists for more medical students to pursue oncology as a career. The Partnership in Cancer Research (PCAR) program provides a summer research experience at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for 12 medical students who have completed their first year of medical training. A majority of participants spend time pursuing cancer research in basic science, clinical, or community-based research.
