The repetition rate stabilization of an optical frequency comb based on diode-pumped solid-state laser technology is demonstrated using an intra-cavity electro-optic modulator. The large feedback bandwidth of such modulators allows disciplining the comb repetition rate on a cavity-stabilized continuous-wave laser with a locking bandwidth up to 700 kHz. This surpasses what can be achieved with any other type of actuator reported so far.

This method allows us to bypass the ytterbium system few-kHz low-pass filter in the f(CEO) stabilization loop and thus to push the phase lock bandwidth up to a limit close to the relaxation oscillations frequency of the erbium system. A phase lock bandwidth above 70 kHz has been achieved with the fully stabilized laser, leading to an integrated phase noise [1 Hz-1 MHz] of 120 mrad.

Using a novel fibered polarization-maintaining pulse interleaver, a single-oscillator phase-noise floor of -171 dBc/Hz at 10 MHz offset frequency has been measured with commercial PIN InGaAs photodiodes, constituting a record for this type of detector.

A total gamma dose of 170 krad(H(2)O) applied in 5 days generates minor changes in performances while maintaining solitonic regime. Pre-irradiation specifications are fully recovered over a day to a few weeks timescale.

Ultralow timing jitter of 83 as (integrated from 10 kHz to 50 MHz) for one laser has been measured with a balanced optical cross-correlator as timing discriminator. Extremely low intensity noise has been measured as well.

The aim is to investigate the photoinduced change in the charge distribution with 50-fs time resolution by probing the effects on the tryptophan absorption bands. A systematic, quantitative comparison of the transient absorption of the 3 samples is carried out.

The complementarity of these techniques is highlighted and demonstrated with calculations. Different aspects of the experimental results are addressed in detail and, finally, the possibilities of performing experiments on liquid dynamics in the pores of TiO(2) films, are discussed in the light of the present results.

The 3PEPS results show a multiexponential behavior with two subpicosecond components that are similar in bulk and interfacial water, while a third component of several picoseconds is significantly lengthened at the interface. The bandwidth correlation function from TA spectra exhibits the same behavior, and the TA spectra are well reproduced using the doorway-window picture with the time constants from PEPS.

A comparative study of absorption spectroscopy at 100 K has been performed on three-dimensional crystals of bacteriorhodopsin extracted from a lipidic cubic phase and on native purple membrane. A modified microspectrophotometer has been designed which yields absorption data with a high signal-to-noise ratio and remarkable reproducibility. Excellent agreement of the absorption spectra of the three-dimensional crystals and the purple membrane is observed provided that a rigorous crystal-handling procedure is followed.
