Water management has shifted from solely technical and engineering approaches towards nature-based solutions (NBS), like natural water retention measures (NWRM), offering benefits beyond hydrology, such as improved well-being and biodiversity conservation. Determining the best type and location of these measures is challenging due to diverse options with varying benefits and effects depending on measure type and location characteristics. While most studies regarding the optimal allocation and implementation of NBS focus on the urban environment, this study presents a methodology for decision-makers focusing on inter-urban regions with limited data on NWRM implementation.

Growing human use of the marine environment increases the proximity of humans to marine wildlife and thus likely increases human-wildlife interactions. Such interactions influence perceptions of nature and promote or undermine conservation. Despite their importance, human-wildlife interactions are rarely considered in ecosystem-based marine spatial planning (MSP).

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a multisystem inflammatory illness of infants and young children that can result in acute vasculitis. The mechanism of coronary artery aneurysms (CAA) in KD despite intravenous gamma globulin (IVIG) treatment is not known. We performed a Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) association analysis in a racially diverse cohort of KD patients treated with IVIG, both using AHA guidelines.

With a global tally of more than 500 million cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections to date, there are growing concerns about the post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), also known as long COVID. Recent studies suggest that exaggerated immune responses are key determinants of the severity and outcomes of the initial SARS-CoV-2 infection as well as subsequent PASC. The complexity of the innate and adaptive immune responses in the acute and post-acute period requires in-depth mechanistic analyses to identify specific molecular signals as well as specific immune cell populations which promote PASC pathogenesis.

Article Synopsis
  • Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a serious inflammatory response following SARS-CoV-2 infection, mainly affecting boys aged 6 to 12, and presents symptoms similar to Kawasaki disease (KD) but with notable differences.
  • MIS-C symptoms can include fever, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory problems, and shock, with frequent cardiac complications like heart dysfunction and arrhythmias.
  • Research indicates that MIS-C may involve an exaggerated immune response to the coronavirus and suggests that while mRNA vaccines carry a slight risk of myocarditis, they are safer compared to the risks associated with MIS-C.

Acute right ventricular pressure overload (RVPO) occurs following congenital heart surgery and often results in low cardiac output syndrome. We tested the hypothesis that the RV exhibits limited ability to modify substrate utilization in response to increasing energy requirements during acute RVPO after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). We assessed the RV fractional contributions (Fc) of substrates to the citric acid cycle in juvenile pigs exposed to acute RVPO by pulmonary artery banding (PAB) and CPB.
